Hawkes Bay's snapper are getting closer

This weekend the forecast was simply superb, so it was to be my first genuine attempt at trying for that elusive first decent snapper of the new season. Several days of westerlys in anyones book is just what the doctor ordered, calms seas, clean and abundant with fish life.

In the middle of the day on Saturday, bang on 12 o'clock came ashore a nice wee snapper of 3kg. I dropped a second one very next cast 15-20 metres in from where it was hooked, but it was fantastic to see it and get a little reward on our beaches.

These westerly conditions have diffinitly started to get the ball rolling. Even the gurnard are heading on in, they seem partial to the anchovies at the moment too. Big work ups of kahawai, large shoals of white bait..... Its going to be a cracker season

I headed over to the Gisborne Surfcasting club's weigh in. Marko had a fantastic looking elephant fish tipping the scales at over 6 kg.

Stunning Elephant!. Good to here the Snaps are beginning to move in. Two caught at le Quesne rd yesterday via Kontikis i hear. Few gurnard starting to nudge in too. Lets hop the next coupla southerly fronts don't undo the good warming conditions weve had of late.

Thats a hard case looking fish! Think i,ll be up the road this weekend depending on weather! Looks like its gona get a good stir up mid week. could be a good thing?? presuming the sea dosent fill up with drift wood and weed!

yea hopfully get up there fri after work, make the most of that weather window. still a few days for that forecast to change yet!

Good feed a fresh fish for tea, that was awsome.

Yeah I havent heard of any on the long lines from the weekend, just gurnard, red cod, and sharks. I did hear of some snapper off mahanga via a long line earlier though.

I would be thinking Mohaka wouldn't be to far of throwing a few fish out too

Yep still no signs of the Snaps got 12 Gurnard and 7 fat Kahawai off the longline yesterday from 4 sets at whakaki but nothing on the rods. Fresh YEM strips as bait. lots of happy family and friends getting a good feed of fish.

Where did you get your snapper Chad? In General how long are your casts eg the cast that got your 3 kg Snapper on Saturday?

The snapper was on a decent cast, virtually as far as I can cast, I wouldn't know exactly how far that is, but its a wee way. The bait was crayfish. The gurnard were much closer. Mine come off a dud cast and a floating anchovie as did chris's. Give it a few more days, they will be in closer thats for sure.

As far as ya long line goes, fresh strips of kahawai is hard to beat, YEM is a pretty rank bait off the beach. I have thrown dozens of the buggers out for very little return. maybe one or two snapper at mohaka, and a few kahawai. They are a great live bait though. In saying that, 12 is not a bad number of gurnard ether.

Pin Fish caught last night!!!

So tried Le Quesne road last night, 1st cast resulted in a nice red fish landed. Unfortunately it was only a cod.
I then had a school of coutta move in and promptly started to destroy my traces, landed a few only to irritate them further.
It was then about 10pm when the rod buckled over, end result was a fat kahawai which unofficially weighed in at 3.1kg. On first sight I actually thought it was a rat king. The other rod went also upon which another fat kahawai came in, this one at 2.8kg's.
Right at midnight, when I was thinking of packing up and heading home one rod started off with small bites, then 30 seconds later bent over. Picking the rod up I felt a nice weight on the end and it started behaving similar to a snapper. Yes I thought, this is it, finally a snapper. A good struggled ensued, I coaxed it ashore only to find to my dismay a very large and angry eel looking at me.

I have had that a few times now

some of the big huas put up a reasonable fight, out of interest I'm going to weigh some of the bigger ones i catch.
Strange thing I have not had much luck with KY at night.

That thought didn't occur to me at the time, only that it was a good size for round here... after I weighed it I gutted and beheaded it. Wasn't till I got home that I released it could've been a winner.

gona give a east coast beach a crack sunday, been way 2 long since ive fishd it, just hope this swell hasnt exposed too much foul ground!!!!!
