friday night

called into whakaki,arrived to find 8 rods out. my mate and i staked out a claim and managed a snap and some ky amongst the sharks

was great to catch up with james and ethan for afew beers its been 3 years, and to meet nick from gisborne.

while the fishing wasnt spectacular the social side was good and thats what its all about somtimes so cheers fullas

ive lost enough brain cells, that now they are at a manageable level!

Fished Napier last evening (Saturday), the guy alongside me was fishing two rods with a pilchard suspended a metre off the sea bed with a small block of polystyrene. He hoping to pick up a Kingfish, he was rewarded with two nice fat Kahawhai.

We picked up five pot sized sharks and three gurnard. Conditions were perfect although the breeze off the sea was very chilly later in the evening.

Fished of the end of Lequesne rd this afternoon/evening - slide-baiting yems on one rod and fishing pilchard/skipjack on the other.
A Kahawai took a livey but spat the hook in the surf. Other than that no action.

Cant talk about Friday night but there were a few fish caught over the weekend at various points around the bay. A lot around Napier if your name was Dunky

Personally I walked into a beach between there and Mahia hoping for guts and glory and was rewarded with a busy time catching kahawai, mullet, trevally, lemons, eagle rays ......If it was small or ugly and undesirable I caught it. No rod was left untouched except for gurnard and snapper. I am genuinely beginning to believe I am cursed.

Still I'm pleased to say there were no stingray stabbings, heart attacks, slips, falls and my limbs remained relatively unbroken after the walk/climb through hils, dales, potholes, brambles and steep drops there and back in the dark (Not recommended).Unless the sun genuinely shines out of your arse its a good idea to take a decent headlamp. I saw two gurnard landed next to me at North Shore Road on rods Gary so reluctantly I have to concede they are there. They skillfully made there way round the Gurnard trace on my line and then obviously swam off along the beach. Maybe they just didnt like Jack Mackerel.

Overall the local Napier fishing this summer has been useless (for me at least) One productive outing in 6 is not good.
The last good outing I had was at Aropaonui, two subsequent trips there have been zero-fish.
Anything more local than that has been a waste of time as well.
Saving the $$ to fish somewhere else

I wouldnt give up on the local area just yet Chris. I saw quite a few goodies weighed on Sunday from the Napier side. They are there.

Indeed they are Rex. On Saturday the sea was really good and the tide was excellent. Looking up and down the beach we could only see one surfcaster and his wife.

I have fished this area three times in the last two weeks and the fish have been most cooperative.

Snaps and Gurnards last two evenings. Have to try another spot, starting to get too busy

Just pannies mate. Havnt heard of any decent Snapps caught on this coast for a few weeks?. Unless you fish in about 38 to 42metres. Saw a 6kg Kingie get taken at 1030 this morning on a livey. Not me i got faaaakkkkkkkkallllll

Good fishes come in on Monday, 15-18 pounds, same spot they have been caught all bloody year too. between 8-9pm. 3 in that size and 1 slightly smaller
