Surfcasting in Wanganui

Hey, I've been watching this forum but decided to join recently as I'm hoping to kerb my current success rate, i have been surfcasting here for a few years, and have caught nothing.... I cant quite figure out what im doing wrong. I have a 12' surfcaster and wade out to between waist and chest deep to through my line, have tried squid and soft baits neither have worked.

I usually fish about 2 hours before the incoming tide and fish through to the high tide. Im hoping to go out this friday after work as the "Jan calendar" that is posted in this forum looks promising for the evening although it will be outgoing tide.

Hints or tips would be awesome... Or if there are any wanganui people on here who wouldnt mind a tag along so i can learn that would be amazing.

Welcome NZtim , I hate to say this But you could be wading over your fish. Are you fishing south beach as it can produce very well . There is a few Fielding Surfcasting Club members who live in Wanganui. Go and see Graham at H F he fishes that coast . Have you tried good pillys yet .

This is a pretty common occurrence so don't beat yourself up over it.
Surfcasting (and actually catching fish) is a lot harder than it looks for the beginner. There are many people who've decided to take up surfcasting and been thoroughly discouraged after not catching anything.
Phill could be right there too, not all fish need deep water. One of the easier fish to catch would be kahawai and they can often be caught right in the surf, in the depth you are wading in..
Try fish baits (pilchards or anchovy) as squid is effective on some species, but its not the all round, multi purpose bait for everything.
What time of the day are you fishing?
Dawn and dusk on any tide are better than perfect tides in the middle of a hot sunny day.

Really?! Hmm, so you reacon just cast from the beach or just wade out to waist deep? No i havent tried pilchard, mainly beacuse when i used them previously i had trouble keeping them on the hooks, do you use whole pillys or part?

@racepics we would be fishing before tides no matter what time of day, so maybe i shall be doing a little bit of re evaluating here.... Thanks guys for the advice.

You need some bait elastic to hold your bait on your hooks. (local fishing shop)

Catch some paddle crabs, use 1/2 a crab as a bait. tie it on well to a couple of 4/0 hooks.Fish evening or after dak if calm or anytime if rough and dont bother wading. Cast out and hold on. You should have a respectible catch real soon.

Hi, Generally i use pillies cut in half but anything should work. As far as getting them to stay on your hooks, go to your local tackle store and get your self some BAIT ELASTIC (i found gary's to be the best) it truley is magic stuff and is great for helping any soft/mushy bait to stay on your hooks when casting and also slows the 'pickers' from stealing your bait. If there are crabs or lice around or you want a bit of added attraction then add some floats to your traces they come in all sorts of fluro colours so take your pick. Goodluck

Depends what you want to catch really. Snapper and gurnard are supposedly caught at South Beach, from the South Mole back along the beach. Look for pipi beds. Access through Putiki from memory. There used to be pipi beds at the northen end of castlecliff down the access points at Karaka/longbeach rd (cant remember now). Could try there. Santoft beach through the forest is also supposed to be ok as well.
Plenty of kahawai and red cod in winter at the North Mole River mouth if you can get a spot.

Your limiting your self with bait a bit using just squid really. Try pilchard and fresh bonito and tie it on to your hooks. Wanganui was and probably still is a repository for crabs (like here) so use floats when your baits are disapearing. A lot of snapper get caught early morning along there Ive heard, so dusk and dawn are the times really. And yep try crab for bait too. There will be plenty of lemonfish along there.

Cheers for all the advice, So this friday at dusk I'll head out to South Beach and use Pilchard cast from the shore, and if I have any results I will post them, (I will use crab if I am able to catch some)

Dont muck around go and see Graham at H/F.Before March i hope to put on a casting and rig day in Feilding see later for the date.Anyone will be welcome.My final fish up north ended up with 5 20kg+sharks .Never missed a bite-used the new vmc sure set eyed,special bend 5/0 and expose plenty of hook with bait elastic allsome-now back to farming

We fished Whangaehu beach on Sunday , caught a few big KY .Wayne caught one at 2.8kg ,the sea was clean with no wind.

Just joined to post. Long time fisherman here born and breed in Wanganui. The next few days are looking great for an early morning fish. This morning you would have been lucky to squeeze an extra rod anywhere alone the north mole.

I would suggest heading north up the beach just past the Karaka st stream. The pipi beds there produce some nice catches.

A rather nice hole has just opened up infront of my house so will be hitting that in the morning.

Hey guys, sorry has been a while since I've been on, still no luck. I will have to try up by Karaka Stream thanks RAV3N, Would love to come along and get some pointers one time if you are keen to share some knowledge.
