TT has been getting a lot of inquires lately about the casting rules.
We are pleased to announce that there is a complete sets of new rules on the NZACA website.
Your club secretaries should also that info.
The most important point is that the line diameter is a minimum size.

The entire idea is to level the field out so those who cant cast the bigger leads are not handicapped by being forced to use thick line.

If you have .30 line on your spools you can cast anything you like up to 150g.

But if you know that 100 g is the best weight for you and your rod having a spool set up with .25 on it will give you some extra distance.

Neil your wrong. You can't cast a 150gm sinker on .30mm line it has to be .31. Ive just been discussing this with Phill through pm's. What happens if your line is tested and its under?? Will everyones line be tested at the nats for every cast??

I will be testing the line and i will allow .30 line on 150 gram sinkers and under end of story so dont go and buy new line.

i wil be testing the line and i will allow .30 line with 150,125,100,sinkers so dont go and buy new line.That is for all grades Midgets can now throw any weight.Also new accuracy distances for women of 40,60,80 meters.Rest the same.

Sakuma nite crystal is what I use . I get from the shelf in the shop

Scuzzy sells it so Phill can supply .

Suffix and ultima also have line in .30.31 sizes

As I said before check you line don't believe what the label says .
People should have been trying different line/lead/ rod combos at their club casting days if you haven't do so your may be surprised.
The casting rules were changed in part to give casters a choice that would better suit them and to aline us with the international rules used in most other countries.

My point is made pretty clear above, even one of the top casters got the new rules wrong

The problem is Phil, realisticly, there is about a dozen casters NZ wide who take casting seriously ( no dis-respect). There is allot of people out there who love to have a crack at it, to see how far they can cast and how they have improved and set personal goals. But for most thats just a case of taking the everyday fishing gear our for a bash, a thump or a crack off and see how well she flys. So realisticly, 80% of the casters at the nationals wont be using specialist gear.

Most fisherman use standard 6kg line. A good surfcasting line which has a mix of durability and last-ability is about .30mm. To ask a large percentage of casters who use that line, crash out 5 ounce sinkers, to change there line to .01mm thicker to be eligable it pushing the line of practicle.

I know there are rules that are different all around the world, but again, being realistic, we have few elite casters. This has been improving with the promotion of new competitions which is fantastic and great to see, but it covers a small percentage. I think Jocks leniency will be fantastic and allot of people will be wrapt with that solution.

I can see your point Phil in creating a equal playing field, but only the serious will be casting those odd ball weights. For the rest, shes all about having a jam at the worm fishing.

Chad most people will not have to change a thing . As for specialist gear I have managed to cast with off the shelf realistically priced rod and reel about $400.00 total in excess of 200mtrs and that was an off the ground cast. I am not an elite caster by any means . The standard of casting in general has improved out of sight in the past few years . This is partly due to the promotion of casting but also to the availability of some good rods and reels at an affordable price. As for the funny weights changing to grams matches the kilo line rating you quoted in your posting.
I don't know were you got the idea that there is elitism in casting because all the top casters are more than happy to spend time helping people improve there casting.
Where you fish most of the time big casts are not required ,down this way it can be an advantage.
By bringing our rules into line with the rest of the world the potential to bring sponcers into the association is increased.
We must look at the big picture which means we will all have to bend a bit.
As a writer you should embracing any forward movement and supporting any positive development in our sport.

Phil, I will let you in on a little secret bro. As a writter, the day I stop putting what I honestly believe in, is the day my pen lays to rest. I don't write things to cuddle with the right people, I place an honest perspective on how "I feel". Shoot straight and aim high approach. Just because I write about fishing, doesn't mean I can't have an honest opinion. I am no different to everyone else. One thing I really don't like is being told what you should be writing about....... Thats for sheep. I support change and progress, but not because I'm told I have too.

The definition of elite Phil, "A group of people considered to be the best in their field". At not point did I say tired, self centred buggers who wont help anyone. I was pointing out that there is only about 12 casters nation wide in that elite group. Guys like Jock move mountains to help people at their own cost of time and money. Guys like Pete from up north are outstanding people who work very hard, train and help people. There is no denying that. However, I still go back to my point, its complicated. Or there would not be numerous discussions surrounding it.

Anyone who can cast 200m plus is in the top 1% of anglers in NZ, there are thousands of surfccasted out there fishing. Very few can achieve that mark. They are an elite group within the NZ circle. The guys casting around that, are in a league of their own. For the rest who just like to "have a go" it has been made a little more difficult.

I fish this area everyday almost Phil. I can tell you from personal experience that distance is important. As it can be all around the country side. But this is straying well off topic from casting specs.

Just out of interest Phil, that $400 off the shelf rod you mention you cast 200m with and is suitable for distance casting..........

What happened to that rod mate?

The new rules are in, get over it ,as I said most people will not have to change their gear at all and I will say it again matching your line size and weight may help some people. If you think these rules are to complicated I give up , if the rest of the world can work it out, I am sure we can.
If you had come along to one of our regional casting days you would probably go home with a smile on your face and an extra 10mtrs on your cast and in your words that would be important .
Look, we have put a lot of money time and effort into cranking up the casting I'm sick of trying to explain the whys and wherefores if you can do it better front up at the AGM and put your name forward to join the executive I am sure your input would be valued.
I would never dream of telling what to write and I don't believe I suggested that but I'm sure there is an article in here somewhere.
There has been some good people go through the NZACA but have been warn down by knockers and left. It would be easy for me to join their ranks but I am way to stubborn for my own good and I am looking at the big picture.
Tell me in simple words what you find complicated and we will try and sort it out.
I'm off to bed now for my much needed beauty sleep we will continue later.

Gentlemen,

, chucking mud only succeeds in getting each other dirty and achieves nothing. Chad, I was fully involved in the implementing of the new Casting rules. Why? Two reasons. one, we needed to align ourselves with the rest of the world. Two, it is not complicated. I am more than happy to have a one on one, as is Jock, to discuss it. The only real difference between before and now is the sinker weights go from ounces to grams.
Why do we use 6kg line to fish with instead of 20kg, simple, you can cast further. I am sure most fishermen already use sinker weights and line weights to give them the best distance when fishing and landcasting is the same. Now you have more scope that's all. It is not complicated.
As an Exec. we agreed to retain Tapered leaders and also certain sinker attachments ie "clips" .It certainly isn't our intention to have created something that is hard to follow. All of the areas that Jock has held Casting days since the inception of these changes have fully embraced it and understand what it's all about..
Once again, either Jock or myself are more than happy to go over it with you but I can assure you there is really no difference from what it was except sinker weights.

I agree with you Yoey let's get it cranked up, onward and forward.
Chad it was not a specialist rod but that was my aim to cast an off the shelf as far as I could the 200mts blew me away but proved a point.
The rod was tested to destruction , it was replaced the next .
PS don't let a ape like Neil borrow your rod. The upside to this testing program is that there is a MK2 version in the pipe line.

There are allot of differences Yoey, you are being nieve to think otherwise.

Shock leaders- both tapered and and non. Tapered regulations seem strange. For a tappered leader, how thick does it have to be at each end?

Sinkers...... Here is an example for you. To cast in the 5 ounce catagory, which has now changed to "150 grams" A sinker off the shelf here weighs 141.7 grams. Which is about 5% lighter or under weight.

So to match that weight, you have to import a special sinker................ Who is going to import casting sinkers and supply these special sinker that make spec. Are these sinkers supplied by the NZACA for free, or do we have to buy them, and where from?

Also, for those that wish to use there own, or make there own, what happens if their sinker falls a few grams over?

Just in my opinion, it could be simpler. Not throwing mud yoey, raising a few points for discussion.

TT Has the leads for sale. TT also supply them for the events I think mate.

As i understand it the shockleaders working section has to meet the diameter rules. .That is the length from the reel to the lead . So .75 from lead to to the reel for 150g and up.

Which rock have you have you been living under your club should have kept you informed and there has been plenty of discussion on this board as well as fishing dot net. If you have genuinely missed all the info I apologise .
I will try to explain but this should be in the rules on the NZACA site.
Shock leaders must be .65 at the release point up to 125gm
.75 for 150 , 175', 200gm
The reason for these sizes is for safety and its UKSF.
For the regional casting and the Nationals TACKLE TACTICS is sponcering the casting weights and they will all be the same.You will be able to choose which weight you wish to cast with the corresponding leader line combo.
You keep saying it could be simpler , well let us in on the secret or get with the program.
GO TO THE NZACA SITE AND READ THE RULES WITHOUT PREDUDICE .

Not a problem goes to show how difficult it is to get the information out there.
The rules and all relevant info should have gone out to all the clubs with their entries.
The NZACA has a new web master so hopefully info will get to members in a better form than currently used .
It's bloody frustrating from our point of view when a year later members still have no idea what's going on.
The question probably is how do we as an organisation fix this.

Dont forget Trilene Sensation in 12lb size it is .30mm too. Phill has it, strong and thin!
