Hawke Bay @ Easter

Hi
Gonna head up to HB at easter to see family . May stow the rods for a poke around. Will be staying in the Tuki Valley so close to either Ocean Beach/Waimarama or Richmond Rd - Haumoana - TA -Clifton area.
I have flirted with surfcasting there before but time and circumstances didnt permit. If different this time I aim to have a poke around late evening or super early morning on either general area. Gonna either fish Pilchard/Mussel or Trev. Dont want secret spots - But if anyone wants to theorize that one choice is better than another I am all ears. I will be picking up a new reel my sister is bringing back from the USA when up there and aim to use that as leverage to get out and about.
Grew up in the Bay so am reasonably good at finding my way about still.

Do wonder what the extreme south end of Waimarama might be like given the rocks and such?

Anyway - Ta V much for reading : Look forward to any suggestions

If its flat definitely Ocean Beach for gurnard. They are thick ou there at present and should stick around.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

I have wondered about a low tide mission oit to the point at the cape also: But a lazy beach cast is always welcome.

No one catches enough around Napier to warrant getting all secretive about it. The odd shoalie has been caught near the Cape, but I don't have a quad to make that trip.

To date, the beach at Richmond Road, Haumoana etc has not fished well for big snapper. I was at Ferry Road this morning and no other rods were anywhere between the two big rivers, which is a fair indication that not much has happened there. Same scenario last Saturday morning. I caught nothing both times.

I'm off to Ocean Beach this afternoon for the high tide. Low tide is ideal for that beach, so this is a recce and maybe a chance for a photograph or two. Will let you know if I fluke something.

You might find Haumoana will fire up the days following the 29th Mark

I fished at Haumoana from about midnight to 3.30am hoping for a big snapper. Not a bite, apart from two baby tope. Biggest snapper weighed for the Pania weekend was 1.4 kg.

Full moon on the 27th, so I will be attempting something somewhere around that time.

Considering March-April is (or has been) the big-snapper time of year around here, it was quite surprising to see all the small shoalies and no big fish at Pania weigh-in yesterday. Perhaps the season is running a little late.

Well RP that is an inviting observation. Aside from the old pipe at Richmond road, The Various river outlets and the Mussel reef at TA I see the coast line as essentially featureless from the Harbour to Clifton.

The water temp still seems to be warm though which might have something to do with it.
Witnessed a kontiki at Whakaki on Saturday haul in a big snapper so they are there, just not in close yet it seems. However, I don't think having lots of shoalies still around is much to be worrying about
