Some Success

Went out to ocean beach wairarapa today for the first time and quickly bagged 5 red cod. Nothing glamourous but the weather was perfect and I hadn't been catching much around wellington harbour so I was happy, one of those perfect days. Will definitely be spending a lot more time there and hopefully bag my first legal blue moki. Thanks to everyone who has offered advice over about the passed year, it is paying off more and more.

Pania's next field weekend (May 11/12) is a "Yoey challenge" weekend and no species are are eligible to be weighed until you first present the weigh-master with two Red Cod

Good stuff Wellyfisher, I was over there on the weekend, was good fun catching Kahawai etc, its a great spot and can produce all sorts of fish.

Red Cod are regarded as a bit of a rubbish fish by many purists on here but there as good eating as many other fish. I caught the odd one off the rocks on the opposite side of the airport (Lyall Bay)when I was in Welly.

Wairarapa's good but I always thought Wainuiomata Beach would be a good place to fish for them and gurnard too on the right day as well?

As a keen fisher of palliser bay i have caught heaps of red cod there over the years. Between now and september is when they are at there fattest, before the spawn. Treated right you can produce some great feeds from them.

I always throw them back because i only hear bad things about them. What is the right way to treat it if one wants a feed from it?

Sorry accidentally posted last comment under old username, didn't think expertfisherman account existed anymore. here is how i treat my Cod.
1. Gut when come ashore and wash well as sand tends to really stick if left on. I always leave head on as it makes them easier to fillet.
2. Chill them overnight or leave in chilibin with plenty of icepacks. If this is not possible at least delay filleting until the fish are nice and stiff.
3. use a really sharp filleting knife. I use a Svord carbon steel knife and a ceramic honer. I tend to rehone after every couple of fish. Victory knives are probably the stock standard and are used a lot commercially.
4. Fillet similar to a gurnard however the backbone of a red cod is curved and so the knif angle starts at a downward angle then flattens out half way through the fillet.
5. i fillet almost to the end of the tail and then flick over to skin.

Next time I am filleting a red cod I will cut a video and upload. you will see just how great these fillets can be Cheers Steve

They fry up real nice on a barbie - slapped in between a couple of bits of white bread - they can be good eating.

A mate of mine ( yes I have one) adds a little curry powder to his sugar salt mix when he smokes them .

Try brushing on some Bit on the Side,Sweet Chilli sauce before the sugar and salt them leave for a couple of hours.Pays to have a nice Chardonnay chilling at the same time.

Good idea, I will try that one myself. At present I am learning a lot about additional flavours with cooking, my partner is of Asian origin and I must say I love the different approach to food and seasoning.

Do you mind if I forgo the Chardonnay and have a Sauvignon Blanc?
