Heard a bit of Murray Deakers show on the radio yesterday. Instead of rugby boofheads going on about lost matches he invited listeners to comment on the suggested changes to regulations in Snapper 1. His lines were jammed and some very good comment was put out there. Politicians really need a transcript of the show to hear what the average fisho is thinking.The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.
Message reads "Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy says no decisions have been made yet on any changes to regulations in the Snapper 1 area, but formal consultation will begin next month.
“Overall the stock is growing and in good health. This is a highly valuable fishery and we need to ensure the benefits are shared sustainably amongst all sectors.
“The new plenary science report shows the stock is rebuilding well, and anecdotal evidence suggests it is in good health.
“However challenges still remain. Overall snapper numbers are up 70% over the last 15 to 25 years, but are still only about half the level of the current management target.
“There will be a full consultation process beginning in July, covering a wide range of options – including increases or decreases to both commercial and recreational limits.
“These options are yet to be finalised, but will include keeping the status quo.
“An option of reducing recreational bag limits may be one of the options floated, but this could be combined with an increase to the overall recreational tonnage. This would allow more people to enjoy this valuable natural resource.
“I encourage everyone to have their say when consultation begins in July, and caution people against jumping to conclusions.
“Any decisions will be based on the best available science, and be widely consulted on. We need to ensure this valuable fishery is sustainable for future generations.
“I look forward to final advice being provided to me in September so that new rules are in place for the new fishing season beginning in October,” says Mr Guy" STOP.

The options to be put before the minister include maintaining the status quo. Such a statement is advising us 'if' there is to be a change, when it will be implemented.
He also advises there is to be a full consultation process beginning in July, so interested parties can have input and he is encouraging possible affected parties to do so.
All seems pretty fair to me. The minister of finance never asks for input to raise taxes or put up the price of petrol, alcohol and the like, but in this instance we all have chance to make submissions.
I read it as "an increase to the overall recreational tonnage" as a decrease in the overall commercial tonnage... or is that just wishful thinking?Piscari Ergo Sum
It's this bit of Orwellian double speak I don't understand:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this means he divvies up (on paper) the total allowable catch (TAC) among commercial, customary and recreational. So recreational get a theoretical increase in quota, which will of course be harder to catch if you can only catch five per day instead of nine. Conversely, commercial are more than capable of catching their quota whatever it may be.
And what does he mean by "more people to enjoy"? Is he suggesting that if good fishos are restricted to five per day, less competent ones will somehow catch more? If the stock increases, that might happen but . . .
In summary, he's fulla shit. Shit provided by his advisors.
Rex, you have missed a golden opportunity. I met John Key last week, he was at Golflands in Hastings. He came up to my golfing partner and I with a very friendly greeting, then he proceeded to hit a few golf balls on the practice fairway.
A very nice, really friendly guy. There wouldn't be many countries in the world where the PM feels free enough to walk up to complete strangers for a quick word.

There used to be a shoe and handbag factory in Paraparaumu that used fish skin for their products. Again cheap imports killed that business i was told. It is amazing how strong cured fish skin is.
