Snelled Hooks

Just taking a browse through some of the tackle pictures here and wondered how many of you snell your hooks. I see a few specially with circle hooks that are not snell tied and though snelling a circle hook was the best way to tie one..

In theory I suppose circle hooks should be snelled it could depend on weather the eye is bent or not .

I generally use a longline knot as I usually have the mutsu hooks without the bent eye on my traces but have started to use the uni knot version of the snell with the bigger circle hooks I bought to try out and some are also tied with the longline knot.

I found a few years ago that the uni-knot would come undone often if using a sliding keeper hook & that was bearing the load.More so with using heavy trace.Snelling the main hook stopped this happening , the resulting pig-tail & lost fish.The double overhand loop is another option simply because it doesn't slip under load but only if the hook eye is big enough to accommodate the doubled line.

My other favourite knot is also the palomar when I want to replace a hook in a hurry without rebuilding a trace after being bitten or busted off, never had any issue at all with the uni knot in regards to failure but have also never used the uni knot on hooks it has always been the longline knot due to its good strength..

+1 for snell knots, but as Phill says, works best on bent-eye hooks.

I use snell knots all the time. If you start to build your trace from the hook snell a straight eye hook and thread your trace through the back of the eye and it will act like a hinge so if you have a bit of a battle with the fish and the hook makes a bit of a hole in its mouth the hook keeps springing back due to the hinge effect and you will still have a chance of landing it. Have landed a few with a hole in the corner of the mouth where it has been hooked.

Always snell. Also offset circle hooks in a vice if there straight. Seldom though as I prefer Gamakatsu.

The same Rex, Only use Gamakatsu. This is the snell knot I use which hasn't let me down, is there any other variants of it which work better?

Thats a good one AndyG. I dont like using the traditional snell as i dont like the idea of the line going on the outside of the wraps as that seems to be prone to getting cut/chaffed etc and if that happens it weakens it. I use this one here, easy to tie and the line that is normally over the top of the wraps is now protected inside the wraps..
