Bad Publicity.

There has been a lot of bad publicity this week about the state of the Hawke's Bay fishery, this will not please the local tourist or accommodation people. This morning I took a trip to Napier, the weather was too good to ignore. I didn't carry any fishing gear, just a camera, the reward was well worthwhile.

When I arrived at Perfume Point the first thing I noticed was the strange sight of large mullet (not YEM's) leaping clear from the water; well something must have spooked them. I got busy with the camera hoping to capture such an unusual occurrence ... it didn't take long.

Being naturally inquisitive I tried to identify the cause of the panic ... that didn't take long either. I have a feeling I would be leaping well clear of the water if I had these rascals after me; a nice collection of Kingfish. There were about eighteen in this rat pack but there were other mobs working as well, the water was alive with activity, nice sized fish.

Well the Kahawhai may be reported as few and far between but if that is due to the professionals then why have they missed all these Kingfish?

Twilight 1: Fourteen members fished, 4 Kahawai were weighed.
Twilight 2: Three Barracoutta and 3 Kahawai were weighed.
Twilight 3: Six Members fished, 1 Barracoutta was weighed.
Twilight 4: Six members fished, no fish were weighed.
Twilight 5: Five members fished, no fish were weighed.
Twilight 6: Cancelled due to weather conditions.
Twilight 7: Five members fished, no fish were weighed.
Twilight 8: Five members fished, 2 Lemons were weighed.
Twilight 9: Six members fished, no fish were weighed.
Twilight 10: Ten members fished, no fish were weighed.

Total fish weighed for the series:
7x Kahawai
4x Barracoutta
2x Lemons.

Beaches fished were, Awatoto, Le Quesne Road, and Te Awanga.

Very informative post, Rex. However, may I ask who is the person with an axe to grind and what exactly is his (or her) beef? May I also ask what that has that got to do with splendid numbers of Kingfish within thirty metres of the shore.

I have no answer why the fish numbers on the beach are so low but the same words were being used twelve months ago, and those who were using a torpedo (or similar) were catching well. My own Kahawhai results on a rod, whilst not brilliant, were acceptable. From a personal standpoint, when I had a torpedo ( I don't now) I only ran my hooks 500 to 700 metres off the beach and I never blanked.

May I offer one suggestion that has not been covered on either this site or in the media. Numbers of bait fish are nowhere near what I would term as normal for this time of year. It is usually common place for my sinker to hit the water and the fish scatter every which way ... this year that is not happening.

Would you offer an answer that if there are no fish in shore, why are the trawlers supposedly fishing so close. The fact must be if there is nothing there for surfcasters then how are the commercials making a living? I am sure you will agree the two facts are at a complete odds with each other.

70% of these fish caught at the Mahia Pennisula 2hrs drive from Napier due to the chronic lack of fish in Hawkes Bay itself. Mahia is also fishing poorly and inner Hawkes Bay even more so.

7 snapper over 7200 hrs fishing (av 33 fishos): Mainly caught Mahia

7 Gurnard over 7200 hrs fishing (av 33 fishos): Mahia mostly

Tourists who want to fish here (particularly Napier)should keep driving as you will probably be wasting your time particularly if you’re looking for quality fish.

Why is it every time Hangler submits a post on this forum,theres a number of users that have always got to shoot him down for the way he sees things,(good or bad),does he not have the right to state his opinion publicly , or are his opinions correct /incorrect and you guys don't like him because of it,or may be he just does it to get a reaction,I don't know, I don't live in your part of the country,one thing Im going to say is ,Hangler you can be on my debating team anytime

Yes Tomdaniel he does indeed have a right to an opinion. The problem is so do I and every one else.

If you want to know why a number of people on this site have little respect for Hangler's thoughts you might want to spend some time trawling through the search facility.

As you said your not from this area so are clearly not aware of how bad the Hawkes Bay fishery is and how touchy this subject is with many people.

Rex, you are an absolute gem, the usual description for people who make posts such as yours is a 'troll'. I spend a lot of time and trouble putting threads on here that are helpful to others, scroll down and read the tripod thread. I ran a long thread of useful tips for newcomers, I am also the first to support Tackle Tactics in the products they sell ... see the current thread on nylon. My posts have also drawn thanks from Phill for mentioning the goods he sells.

When it comes to whining, Rex, just what part of the UK do you come from?

I spent a very enjoyable three hours on the beach this morning recording a video that may help others, especially newcomers, catch a bigger than usual fish to test their gear, also their skill. Without putting anything on here against your 'oh so typical tirade', I was indeed very happy with the result ... Rex, when was the last time you really enjoyed yourself surfcasting? I do every single time I go.

Someone once wrote it is called fishing, not catching. I don't worry about what the fish are I catch, from YEM's to Rays, such is the lifetime's enjoyment of my chosen sport, especially when helping others.

Now if you really wish to wind me up then put on a thread about the one million dollar snapper competition that is to be run. I am proud angling in all its forms is an amateur sport, although with the huge money prizes being offered in competitions, I agree the tag amateur is beginning to look like a joke.

Sorry I am late answering your abuse (read the site rules on this subject, top of page) but I was on the beach bright and early. Believe it or not I was enjoying myself ... you should try it.

Tomdaniel, this is an excellent site where much can be gleaned about the wonderful sport of angling. Please don't take any notice of the kind of responses the pictures have drawn, it's all water off a duck's back from those who don't, or can't catch fish.

Hawkes Bay fishing is crap....for years we have had great fishing. My time as a child was filled with photos of snapper caught all along the Napier beach fronts. Kahawai was a by-product. My koro use to say..."no snapper oh well I caught some kahawai anyway, they always save the day". Nowadays you cant even say that!! Bad publicity...I think not!

Take less, leave more...tomorrow is another day

Hell you should all come up to the far north fishing. We have no problem catching fish of our beachs lol and the bloody trawlers are always stripping our shore lines

, I was fishing the 90 mile clubs workmans tankard the other weekend and sure enough a trawler was crusing the coast with his nets. Net results where amazing. there where 2 fish weighed in at over 7 kg. my biggest was 5,5kg and didnt even figure in the prize money lol.I caught 11 snapper and could only weigh in 5 of my heviest fish. this was 5 snapper and they weighed in at 20.86kg lol. Thats an avereage of 4.1kg a fish which won me the tankard

. What im trying to say is, i dont think there is any easy answers to why there is no fish on some beachs. the fact is we dont know and are just making guesses as to what the problem may or may not be. For once I think Hangler could be on a right tract, hes just trying to open peoples minds as to what is accuatlly the problem in the hawkes bay.
Hell i would be pissed as you guys are if I was fishing day in day out for shit results and the trawlers where fishing of the beachs catching fish. They are only fishing there because there is fish to be caught, so the question is why arnt the fish venturing near the shore. Thats what we have to discover.

Your in paradise Frosty, you lucky bugga. Problem is according to the boat ramp surveys done by the Hawkes Bay Sports Fishing Club the boaties are not doing as well as they used to either so its not just a shore problem. This material (recorded stats)were presented at the Legasea HB meeting. Thats why they formed. Wasn't just bitter and twisted surfcasters like I'm supposed to be. Every ones noticing a decline.

Second point is that if you look back at all the various club stats theres been a steady decline over the last 5 or 6 years. Something has changed, oddly enough about the same time as MFish was absorbed into the superministry MPI.

One example of this and I hate to harp on about it is gurnard. The trawlers took 128,189 tonne of gurnard OVER there quota of 725,000 tonne in 2010. No one was ever held to account that I know of. This is the standard of MPI policing here. Very poor. If you think about if you add customary and recrational take you could be looking at nearly 1 million tonne of fish sucked away. I'm no scientist I admit that but can any biomass with stand that sort of hammering in one year and just recover overnight?

We also know that certain companies have recieved fines for quota mismanagement to the sum of millions in the past and yet they even now another case has been revealed. They just seem to be able to pay and walk away. How can any one have any faith in fisheries management where this occurs?

Anyone who gets around here hears all the tales of cowboy trawlers mostly fishing at night, dumpiing fish, misreporting stats, fishing close to the shore and basically doing whatver they like. Dont take my word for it, these are comments from trawlermen themselves backed up to an extent by a 3rd degree documentary shown on TV3 thats been widely circulated on social media. One guy I met in a professional capacity invited me out on his boat, he was so keen to show that not all of them are rapists. But he was the first to admit a some of them are.

There are fantastic guys here who bust there balls to be sustainable fishermen but there are others who dont seem to give a damn. They backed by unscrupulous companies that support them, and seem to be very much focused on the bottom line before anything else.

Also its very political here, certain fishing companies are well known for handing big campaign donations (Some would call it bribery) to certain political parties. Dont take my word for it, look it up TVNZ it was reported on the news about 18 months ago. MPs were named including some from this area. Not fanciful claims from me but factual news items.

Add to this Iwi interests, who are connected to a party very chummy with the current govt and who are doing very well thank you very much by selliing there quota and you start to see the extent of the problem.

These are some of the things that I suspect have got people up in arms and frankly I dont think you can blame them.

Just as an aside the original posting is about Kahawai and if you look at some of the articles I've posted you'll hopefully soon realise that the original post actually refers in a very back hand way to comments made in the press. Some might say this post seeks to undermine them, but I can suggest people make up there own minds on that.

You and I both know some of the guys who made these comments in the press Frosty and we both know the huge contribution they make to surfcasting and indeed the comp in question. They dont do it for the money. They do because there bloody good people and I'm not sure they deserve to be singled for daring to speak up. Still everyone has the right to an opinion, I know that.

It looks like someone hacked my account and must have made some comments that were regretable and shouldnt have been made. Ive deleted them because they just weren't on and were unacceptable. Whoever said these things deserves a boot up the arse for being a passionate and concerned fisherman, but also for being too hot headed for there own good.

But so saying I aint gonna sit around and see good people bagged by someone with unknown agendas, without stating my point of view. I dont think thats unreasonable.

Said all I'm gonna say Frosty, take what you will from it. Send some of of those beauties you tease us with down here if you don't mind because I can tell you now theres not a lot to be caught of a beach here unless your very, very lucky. Rex, this is my idea of fishing, it comes highly recommended. This is my first time standing in front of the video camera. This was shot on Sunday the 8th and Monday the 9th of this week. For a seventy-two year old I am pleased with my first effort ... of course I expect you to differ.

Hangler, no vitriole has been posted at all. I have deleted the stuff that was put on here as it was uncalled for and unnecessary. You have a right to an opinion and I apologise for what was said. Im hot headed and I sometimes I see red when I should go and suck a chill pill. This was one of those times.

I see all posts on this site as valuable and many of yours have been very informative.But I wont agree with your philosophy and views on the fishery and that is the end of that. I will always argue in favour of the fishery and I wont change my views. So saying I accept my views are not everyones, but Im still entitled to express them. I just need ensure they are presented reasonably, which on this occasion I did not. End of story.

I thought the vid was good too. There have been a few rays around lately. Caught an eagle ray a week or so ago. It was bigger than that one though, and put up a bit of scrap. Still wont eat them though. Sent it back with its sting between its legs to fight another day.

Often they bite without taking off. They just nibble it and sit there sometimes. Other times they will take off like rockets, such as the time when one took my Kilwell slx and daiwa reel for a swim a few years ago. Taught me a valuable lesson about setting your drag properly.

Thank you for that message, Rex. One day perhaps we could fish together and then let body language and facial expressions be a part of the conversation, these features emphasise what is being said and when accompanied by a smile, there cannot be offence taken.

When I wrote for publication in well known angling magazines, before putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, I always looked, objectively at the topic under discussion. I hate knee jerk reactions and when you think things through, very often there is common ground.

I will answer one point you raised in an early post, you believe I have a certain sympathy for the Ministry of Primary Industries. To a certain extent you are correct. You need to understand they are the body who sorted out the Napier meat company of Bay Cuisine. This company are now facing charges before the courts to do with contaminated meat. That meat ended the life of my first wife. I switched off her life support system, not an easy decision or a nice job. Primary Industries have been very supportive when the health system did nothing but turn a blind eye especially to their own failings of which there were a few.

With surfcasting there are huge problems, not just with a lack of certain species here in Hawke's Bay, but with surfcasting in general. My main concern is that it is often the angling press who take on the big issues, whereas it should be the NZACA. It has always been thus and until attitudes change, nothing will alter.

I love fishing the surf and have spent an entire lifetime, and a bloody fortune doing so. It is one of the countries largest participant sports, yet support for clubs and the NZACA is very poor. I have my ideas why and it's about time some people sat down and really thrashed out the problems. Unity is strength and until the NZACA has strength and the support of all anglers, sorry, it's not worth a zac.

Hangler, the jumper is a Grey Mullet. They are more than common im Hawkes Bay waters and I suspect that your rat kingfish school is also a school of grey mullet. They grow to good size and can reach 2kgs. Most are about 1 kg. They travel up our rivers as well. In the Tukituki I have seen them as far up as Waipawa. These could be a wonderful sportfish (and eater to I suspect) but are very hard to lure into taking a hook. Some talk of taking them on breadcrusts, others on worms. In my years of fishing I have caught a handful and usually out of the blue when targetting them hasnt worked.

Gary, I have fished for grey mullet for more years than I care to remember, certainly in excess of your age. The fish in the picture are between two and three feet long, way beyond the size of any grey or golden mullet I have ever seen.

The fish jumping out of the water were very possibly grey mullet, they certainly weren't YEMs, but what was chasing them? I will stick with the scenario of Kingfish, along with the guys who had balloons out with a live bait under them. They had the chance to see the fish and I think they knew what they were doing.
