Having recently shifted to the BOP where fishing spots are more readily accessable I find I'm in the position of not having to dismantle my rod and reel between trips. Apart from the normal cleaning and loosening I can keep everything assembled because I'm only a few K's from where I fish. I have an SUV with roof side rails and have tried a couple of times to tie the rod to these, and it works but the rod is sitting on the roof of the car. The custom made cross pieces available from Repco and the like which clamp on are pretty expensive so I'm looking to make something with heavy dowel and sponge. But, fishermen like us tend to be pretty adaptable, so, any ideas, has anyone done the like, or perhaps everyone sets up on the beach?

I have quite a new car so I wanted a roof rack that didn't look out of place. I bought one from Repco and I have to say I am pleased with the purchase.
After spending many years in engineering as a fitter welder, I have a natural instinct for DIY but this time I gave in to the extra expense.
I can't ofer any advice on how to make a roof rack for your car but I can tell you these frequently pop up on TradeMe and they don't sell for the earth. You could also contact any local secondhand car dealers. They usually remove roof racks as they are not a bonus when it comes to resale. You may be lucky and find just what you are looking for.

Ski/snowboard racks are the go. Trademe is the best place. I got a pair for about $50

Just had a quick look on the Trademe site for you, there are pages of roof racks. I am sure you will find something to suit at a price you are happy with.

Druid cut some bike tubing about 40mm long and tie them on with that, works a treat, I use it for tying all sorts of gear on my side rails. You can tie the rods to the top or the sides of the rails. When you cut the tubing cut it down the centre so you will get two pieces. Wrap it around a few times and then past the end under the last wrap it will hold on tight as. Cheers Charlie.
