How to do the off-the-ground and pendulum cast without killing anyone?

So pretty much the extent of my casting ability is the common overhead cast with an average cast of 60 meters. Although that's fine for most fishing locations, I would really like to learn how to do the off-the-ground and pendulum cast (for that maybe some day trip to 90 mile beach). I tried to practice it at my local rugby grounds today but my line almost ended up on the road (waaayyy of course)

. And that's pretty much happened every time I've tried doing both the pendulum and the off-the-ground cast.

Jumping to one of the big powercasts when you are hitting 60 m with the overhead thump would likley end in a broken rod . Most people can reach 130 m or so with a overhead thump. So either you need a bit more practice or gear better suited to casting .

I'm using an okuma Solaris rod and a okuma avenger reel. As for line I'm working with 10kg mono with 20kg braid on top of that. The furthest I've ever been able to cast is 80 meters. So I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Hard to say. Is the lead hitting the water hard and fast or dropping in from a high height ?

One is letting go too late the other is too early . Pick a spot in the sky about 45 degrees up and aim at that as that gives you a decent amount of height and distance.

The basics are have a reasonable amount of drop from the tip to the lead 4/5 ft and try to have it roughly the same each time as the drop effects the timing .

Get your leading hand (left hand for right handers )up nice and high with the right hand down as low as the drop will allow lean back and swing the lead out behind you a bit .

Once the lead hits the top of the swing out start moving forward so your body weight is loading the rod as well .

As you move the left hand should be pulling down hard as the right hand is punching up . Getting the timing right is the big thing here as its all happening quite fast.

Once the lead is away follow the line with the rod . I see people but the big effort in on a cast the immediately point the rod at the horizon...the line is rubbing like hell on the rod tip rather then just flowing out in a nice line when you drop the tip down = lost meters in excess friction .

Find someone who can show you these casts, youll get the idea in an hour or so then it just takes years of practice.

Yep I always look 45 degrees.

I think my main problems are the length of the line from the tip to the sinker and pointing the rod to the horizon. I will have to train myself to keep it fixed at 45 degrees. Will try again tomorrow. I will also catch up with the local surfcasting club to see if I can get a lesson or two.

Hi Hapuka

Ron Prestage Deputy Editor of the Fishing Paper. (Darryl Crimps Publication) asked me to put this up for you, to assist you in your casting. Ron uses a modified overhead thump,a little bit of the pendulum is incorporated in his cast and he can certainly get that line and sinker out there. He is up there with me, and I use " The Off The Ground Method. Its a bit hard to explain Rons cast, you have to see him cast, to understand it.

Any way here are his tips for you.

So I did some more practice I was able to improve my cast by 25 meters. But i'm still not in the 100 meter club yet.

I had to put some more line on my reel but I find that the knot I did (double uni) is having an impact on how smoothly the line comes off the reel. Are there any other *simple* smaller/smoother knots I could use instead?

I use the slim beauty knot for tying shock leaders onto mainline, have never had it catch the guides on my rods or the level wind on an overhead I have started to surfcast with. Here is an animated how to on tying the slim beauty

If the slim beauty knot was no good I would not use it or even recommend it, I use it for both braid and mono

Hapuka, people who are in the learning procedure of surf casting often get carried away with the necessity of casting long distances, in general terms this is a fallacy.

The person who is learning to cast generally makes one fundamental error: if they are right handed they generally use only the strength of the right hand to lift and punch the weight out to sea. May I suggest you use the following method, you may be pleasantly surprised at the outcome.

Lay the sinker out behind you so you are in direct contact at all times. Next turn your body toward the sinker, so you are at 45 degrees. You are now ready to execute a very powerful cast using your body for extra punch when you make the cast.

There is one other part and this is most important: do not rely on just the right hand and your turning body for more power, you must learn to pull down on the rod butt with your left hand. Now you are using three separate power sources and the difference it makes to distance is quite amazing.

If you normally use the overhead cast I would suggest you forget about the pendulum cast until you have mastered the power achieved by the cast suggested above. This really isn't difficult, with half an hour's practice you will have it well mastered.

By pulling down with your left hand you have doubled the inertia, by using a body twist, even more so. All by just turning the body at forty five degrees, I urge you to give it a shot.

Of course reverse all this should you be left handed.

Try the FG knot or the sebile knot for braid to mono shockleader. i find the sebile easier to do. there is no knot as such and runs extremely smoothly.

Nice little selection of knots that you guys have recommended. I will have to practice all of them.

One thing I forgot to note that I was using braid as a shock leader, but I'm starting to think that its not such a great idea on a surfcasting rod. Now I don't know if its due to my casting technique or not but I'm finding that the braid is eating up the tip on my Solaris. I know that braid has pretty much no stretch and can be pretty abrasive on plastic.

In my opinion dump the braid and go for a tapered leader. If the tip is damaged have it replaced only takes a couple of minutes your local tackle shop should be able to do it for you.

I forgot to ask, what kind of tapered leader am I looking for if i'm using 10kg main line?

Phill has tapered shock leaders which goes from 70lb and tapers down to 20lb. listed on his online store which is accessible from this message board in the line department.

I got my rod tip fixed today, they reckoned that the cracks in my rod where old and the braid had managed to find its way into the grooves.

Also I did some more practice today and I can't seem to get past 85m. My off-the-ground cast (Brighton cast) is now straight but the results are pretty much the same, 85m.

Edit: Lol, I just looked at this picture and realized that I haven't been putting enough tension on the line. My sinker, rather than being behind me (like in this picture), was in line with the rod.

hi Hapuka, if you fish open beaches with no foul ground look to buy a tapered line. These are 150m., no joins or knots but cost about as much as 5 tapered leaders. One tip for you, the power should come in the first 10% of your cast, not through the whole action. Use your legs, back, shoulders and arms and try to break the rod in that first 1/2 second of your action. This leaves you more time to get your release precise. If the rod breaks get a better one.

Hi there, yes I'm having trouble with letting the rod do the work vs me. I am trying to find a tutor in the Wairarapa area that could give me hand.

I notice watching videos and looking at images that there are different arm positions. I notice that some people like to have their front arm out straight and their reel arm bent and others prefer to have it the other way around. What's up with that? And which is better for off the ground casting?

Sigh, I'm still not getting the hand of it. I've been watching plenty of tutorials on youtube on basic beach casting but something still isn't clicking in my head.

Its probably something really obvious.

I didn't have any shock leader so I used some cheap 60lb mono that I have from the warehouse, It didn't turn out so well using the slim beauty knot. It quickly unraveled itself (its probably the way how I'm tying it).

I've decided I'm not going to continue with casting practice until I find a tutor.

lose the 60lb warehouse crap buy a pack of crimps and use it for trace line that is all it is good for. what weight sinkers are you using 60lb would allow for you to cast a 6 ounce sinker really you need that tapered leader.
