Replacement Fishing Vehicle

I am looking at replacing my fishing vehicle and am after your thoughts. I am based in the Hawkes Bay and fish local beaches with the occasional trip up to the far North. I am after something that is very reliable, reasonable on fuel, would be fine with towing a trailer with quad on it and would be comfortable driving the 90.
I am thinking about spending between $10K and $15K.
Any thoughts?

Have a look at a 4x4 Kia Sorento. I have one and it does all the Hawkes Bay work on rivers and beaches and is reall comfortable for the "long miles". I have a deisel and it is econmical. Great towing power, they are known for it. Make sure you get the model with 4 wheel drive on demand and not theall time 4 wheel drive

Recovery items for self recovery:
High-lift jack capable of getting the wheels well off the ground. (you can lift the car right up and fill in the holes you just made getting yourself stuck)
A good shovel.
Maxtrax boards or something similar.
Winch and ground anchor (if you don't have a ground anchor you can bury your spare wheel in a hole and hook the winch rope to that)

As always its a good idea to let your tyre pressures well down before running on soft sand. (Also an electric pump to get back to road pressures when you come out)

Thanks for the thoughts there are definitely a couple of different options to think about.

- The more comfortable SUV for getting there (like the Kia or it's Hyundai twin) that may find the beach quite tricky and
- The more dedicated fishing vehicle that is at home on the beach and the tracks getting there. However it might be a few years older and having a few more KM's on the clock with not as great "cross over" appeal and wife friendliness.
The info on car recovery was also very helpful. There is no point getting on the beach unless you have

a good plan to be able to get off it..

The modern electronically controlled common-rail diesel engines are also far superior in both power and fuel economy compared to the old school diesels such as that in the Mitsi.
If you want it to drive like a car they are what you need.

The van by comparison is a truck and only gets about 12-13L/100km because it weighs more than 2000kg empty and has the aerodynamics of a barn door..

The plus side is its simplicity and price, you can pick them up for 6-9k.

Also hard to go past a 4.2 Nissan Safari manual never stops pulling and cheap as to run . Rust is the only thing that will kill a Safe.

Hyundai Terrican diesel me old mate. Good on fuel, heaps of power and very comfortable plus will go anyware

It's so good I don't bother to worry about it. I fill up in Foxton about 65ltrs tow our camper trailer to Auckland and use about 3/4 of a tank.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have made the choice, paid the money and now have a new set of wheels. :-)
I went for a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe with the diesel engine. It will be a comfortable long distance ride, with plenty of space and excellent fuel economy. It was a good price and there were 14 thousand km of RUC's already paid which sweetened the deal.
It is more a car to get me to the beach rather than along the beach, but when my wife asked " would you drive any car along those beaches?" I had to say "I don't know if I would" - I normally fish by myself ( Fridays is my normal fishing day as II work on Sundays). So if you see me out there (Number plate 1CTHU5) do stop and say hi. :-)

I am already amazed at how economical it is - great for the long fishing trips.
Under normal driving -it is auto sensing 4WD (like the Kia) and there is a diff lock button to keep it in 4WD if the conditions get tricky. :-)
