First blood for the squall15

Went for an evening fish at Rogers road in Pukehina last Friday which was my second outing with the penn squall, didn't get many bites apart from one Kahawai from earlier in teh evening that was destined for the smoker when I was ready to go home at 10:30pm the fish started to bite again (bloody murphys law strikes again).

I bought the Penn SQL15 during labour weekend after I gave up trying to locate parts for the Abu seven sprint which ended up on trade me for $1 reserve a move I do not regret as I have found the new reel much nicer to cast and found myself getting really good distances with it and so far only one bird nest and that was labour weekend.

The veritas LR and squall 15 combo in all its glory.

Good stuff. I've had my squall 15 for just over 2 years now and it hasn't missed a beat. It took my two biggest snapper last season of 5.65 and 6.88kg. I've got mine on a 12' custom rod, built for me 20 years ago. I can cast 30% further with an overhead than I can with a eggbeater. I don't know about you but do you get a lot of strange looks from other fishos for fishing overhead reels for surfcasting?

I get the occasional funny look when using the overhead. I actually had a couple of guys strike up a conversation about it at Pukehina last friday asking what distances i get with it i just told them around or just over 100m with it, that day i was putting out 2 thirds of the spool by time the sinker hit the water using the off the ground cast.one of the guys was actually using a veritas LR like mine and he didn't realise they were designed to take overheads so he was quite interested as he had been thinking about trying the overhead and they were even asking about what the squall was worth to buy and what reels they should look at. So i just told them about the squall,okuma cortez and daiwa slh20 and 30 reels but recommended the first two due to having the magnetic braking systems.

Well done!!!
I'm thinking about a left hand wind overhead for casting. Don't want an Abu. Prefer a bigger size reel. Was looking at Shimano Torium both in 20 and 30 sizes. I see Penn make the Squall in 60 size but its a lever drag. I seem to recall that lever drags do not distance cast well ??? Can someone please enlighten me. TIA

Pete,
As mentioned above, overhead reels for casting need some sort of magnetic brake to make them user friendly. I remember using a Penn JigMaster in my Wellington days and enduring many a catastrophic birds nest until I learnt to thumb the spool correctly. It is possible to custom Mag a reel, that isn't specifically designed for casting. I'd suggest you look at two YouTube channels which cover a lot of this. One is Paul Edwards "Sandmans Tackle Time" channel or try "Pimp my Reel". In one video Paul has mag'd a Daiwa lever drag reel and it casts like a demon. I think the kits are available ex UK.

Hey Dodd thanks for that. You have planted a seed in my minds.
I have a left hand Penn Jigmaster and I spooled it with DuPont kevlar braid, many, many years back before braid was sold in NZ. Many a burnt thumb and birds nest resulted because the reel had a heavy steel "deepwater fishing" spool. I later bought a plastic and an alloy casting spool and found these easier to use with mono.But I have to tighten the spool a lot which cuts distance, I cant cast these reels very well, need heaps of practice!!!

Practise makes perfect I also use old rubber coated cotton gloves from the pairs I wear out at work to avoid getting a hot thumb while casting comes in handy for casting eggbeaters too. Try looking at getting a reel with a magnetic or centrifugal brake you won't regret it, biggest thing I like about the penn squall is the indicator rings on the spool to give you an idea of how much line you have got out also stops me from over filling the reel when re-spooling.

Heading out to Matata DoC camp for the night so I can get an evening and early morning session in before I go back to work on monday.

Yes it is one of the drawbacks of small freespools - not a lot of line left on the spool should you hook into something big.
Also, when you're this far down the spool, the retrieve rate is really slow

I have a PENN Squall 15 and am looking for a rod to support it - and this Abu 14’6 looks like the one. 9 months since this post, you still happy with your choice?
