Wise words from all above, how is it your fault the engine knocks. Customers with this attitide are better ditched. The first repairs were necessary to facilitate further diagnosis. I would have sought authorisation for the alternator etc. Even without that he is on dodgy ground asking for money back, how would he have driven it away? Used engine is a big no no. If thats what he wants (probably the only economical fix) let him buy the engine and pay you handsomely to fit it. If you cave you will get a que of p***takers wanting work for nothing
