While it's a bit risky, you don't have to have an independent body for inspections, you can self inspect, the HSE state that a 'competent person' has to carry out the inspections, & document them.
A Competent Person can be defined as “A person who has such appropriate practical and theoretical knowledge and experience of the equipment to be thoroughly examined or inspected as will enable them to detect defects or weaknesses and to assess their importance in relation to the safety and continued use of the equipment".
I think this is down to correct procedure of inspections & acting on faults found, & showing that you have via an inspection book. The same way as you would for your COSHH inspection.
