I was at a refresher at Newbury two weeks ago and it was explained to me as Dave Hill says.
If you MOT a vehicle and then write it off in an accident and scrap it, it will still have an MOT.
A traffic cop also told me the same about only being able to "see" the fact that the vehicle is MOT'd and not being able to look at the most up to date test result. Which is poor in todays age of computer systems.
