i am sat here chuckling away now after reading these posts. i am so glad it aint just me who gets those customers either. i had a customer with a 440 volvo with a very internittant none start (every 5 weeks) got the story and no cranking when it happened, got it in one saturday and couldnt fault it so i wired a 5w bulb inside the car to the starter wire and explained to customer to look if the bulb lights when he tries to crank it then i would know if it was a starter or wiring fault and could book it in. DIDNT CHARGE HIM and let him take it. 5 days later he rings and it wont start, went out to recover car (2 mechanics 2 mile away) turnes out to be big coil assembly, got him a 2nd hand unit £40 and cap and rotor, car was sound. came to collect car and looked at the bill....recovery £20 parts £55 and labour £20.... kicked off at coil price said he could get brand new for £50 so i asked him to get me 10 aswell.....then he lost it because of the recovery charge because I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BREAKDOWN!! and it should be free recovery??? he said he would pay for the repairs but not the recovery so i refused to give him his keys.....then things got heated and he tries to jump over the office counter to get them......i "restrained him" and he eventually threw his credit card at me with some abuse and drove off....i had saved this guy at least £70 getting him a used coil and getting it and that happened,i was amazed. so whats the law on reasonable force before they sue you??!!!!!
