Right then seeing as none of you can guess the answer, I had better tell you. The Rev counter wasn't working and the hand brake light was stuck on. We couldn't work out how the inductive sensor worked as it hadn't got a magnet in it. After an hour or so messing about trying various things we tried waving a magnet about in front of the sensor, and the rev counter worked perfectly, (So if someone has an old peugeot /citroen flywheel kicking about, could they please have a look to see if there is a magnet embedded into a drilling in the flywheel rim.) So our fix or bodge was to switch things around,( Instead of the magnet being in the flywheel, We Couldn't see why it couldn't be in the sensor and pick up on the drilling in the flywheel.) The customer wasn't prepared to remove the gearbox, just to get the rev counter working, so I found a Renault Crank sensor with the magnet built in, which was the same diameter as the peugeot one, we removed the steel bracket, and excess plastic from it's mounting, slotted it into the peugeot housing, Started the car and the rev counter worked perfectly and as a bonus the Hand brake warning light went out. And would you believe that we have got a 306 D with exactly the same problem, we have messed with it before and got to this point where everything checks out ok, So that will now be coming back in for a mod.
