PRS & PPL #

Sorry to drag this one out again about the PRS but now we have the PPL another tax on the poor old business man it seems we may have to comply or turn the radio off to this young hairdressers expense.

Hi Kelly

It seems harsh when the lady thought she had done all that was necessary by buying a PRS licence.

Then the PPL surfaced and, it seems, were less than helpful in makig sure she complied before taking legal proceedings.

How many other organisations needing us to pay for a "licence" will now surface?

It's time that proper guidance was given by government on this and the rules clearly defined - time to lobby our MPs?

So who are PRS then? I thought that having their licence entitled the holder to play the radio. How many licences do you have to buy!

The people taking this unfortunate victim to court are PPL Ltd. A private company! Can I set up a company that 'looks after the interests of performer's rights' and go round taking anyone to court that doesn't have my authorisation? Even though no-one's ever heard of me!!

What a brilliant way of making money!

I think the only solution to this is to personally approach an individual artist and ask if they'd mind if you played their music (and no-one else's) in your establishment.

Not Mick Hucknall though - I'd have to kill myself!

Afternoon all,

Seems to me that one lot looks after radio and the other your recorded music on CD's etc. I feel sorry for this young lady but....if I was warned once as she was, then I would have got the licence. No idea how much it is but if say it was a £100, then that is £2 per week or 40p per day. This could be paid for by adding about 10P to her charges. Good luck to her.

Hi all , a similar topic on here talked about PRS before . Bottom line as i see it is as follows : Most of us buy cd's and usually the only way you are going to buy the artists cd is by hearing it on the radio or borrowed from a friend ...nope can't borrow it as that stuffs the copywrite so we all just hear it from the radio ok .
Now when we listen to the radio (usually at work) we like the artist/s music and possibly buy their cd/s so the artist is quite happy getting their slice of the nice little earner and getting all famous by us listening to their records on the radio.
So now they want the money from the radio station , the money from the cd (if we hear the music on the radio) and the money from us as the poor soles are struggling in these tough times to get out of bed for no less than 10k
Sum up , PRS look for our cash , we don't buy license as it's just a rip off ,listeners drop , radio stations lose money from advertising agents as it based on market share or take the simple route .... offer your customers fee ear plugs so they can't hear the music LOL

Hi all i have been plauged with calls the past couple of weeks asking to speek to the boss i just say he is out , dont known what to say to them. Any ideas?

the only way to stop 99% of unwanted sales calls is to have your phone line set so it will not accept anonymous calls, Yes that means a few of your customers cant ring on a landline, but they most people have a mobile too !!
I did exactly this about 3 years ago & never for a moment regreted it, I can actually do more work now as I am not on the phone to idiots all day trying to sell me something I have never heard of.

If you are complying with the legislation or it doesn't apply then tell them if they want the information then call at your premises to get it..

We have had them all on the phone and call around to check for radio's playing music in the workshop, we asked them if the customer left the radio on and we brought the car in the workshop with it still playing was the an offense, YES, so we the told them we were told not to touch the radio by the customer, still an offense,

we now have an old car parked between the three units in the compound it must belong to someone but no one could tell you who, and the owner must come in each morning and turn the radio on, its great just back ground music all day long at no cost to anyone, and these people that have gone out of their way to create a job for themselves by steeling money of us hard working tradesmen don't get a penny.
