M.O.T Station - Information required #

now that the rules have changed for smaller workshops to carry out m.o.t tests i am thinking of applying to vosa for a test station.i have had one company come out and draw plans and he said you should be allowed to carry out tests.i wanted vosa to come out and have a look and to tell me if the workshop would be ok but it seems like you can only contact them by e-mail.which we did but they just sent me lots of forms to fill out .i wanted someone to look and say yes its ok before we start getting all the quotes in.my workshop is in bristol.has anyone had similar problems .also do any one know a company that i can buy/lease the equipment.thanks

hi paul.
i have been in the process of setting up a testing bay for the reasons you have. it is not as straight forward as i thought it would be. council planning permission personal and business references required. i am almost at the end of it now. the supplier you choose will come out and let you know if it is possible. i spent i lot of time looking and getting numerous quotes from different companys etc..pages,snap on. i chose v-tech in the end and i am so glad i did,they have done 99% of all the work,form filling etc, they were best priced and the equipment has the longest warranties, ring ashley hance at v-tech,ask for a visit, you wont regret it.

Hi Paul, we moved premises & set up an ATL 2 years ago. We basically sent in the application before we had even signed up the lease or purchased any equipment. Our local VOSA guy came out and had a look & meassure up. They then give you an approval in principal, so although you may have to do a bit of paperwork beforehand, you don't have to carry out any work (or spend any money) until you're sure you'll get approval.

p.s. the quotes we had for equipment varied by a huge amount. In the end we went for a Ranger test lane with a scissor lift and a Bosch Gas annalyser/smoke meter, both have been trouble free.

Thanks for the information sean and ian i will follow it up .i did speak to a women at vosa who wasent very helpful and said i had to down load some forms and fill out and send back.but its asking for references/bank details etc .all i wanted is for someone to call in and say yes or no before i start spending money.i will call them again and see if shes in a better mood.thanks again

have been offered quite a good deal from snap on for a m.o.t package has anyone had any dealings with them for a m.o.t package.good or bad experience.

Hi Paul
We had a quote from Snap On about 3 years ago, we agreed to buy due to the fact we were told that we could calibrate the rolling road ourselves ( we told sales man that this was very important ) & the equipment necessary would be included in the deal. we had all ground work done to fit snap on gear, when we asked about the calibration equipment the sales man said he could no longer supply it,( he knew from the start that he would not supply equipment to calibrate rolling road ) so we backed out of deal. We went with Ashley Hance we had to alter rolling road ground work but it was worth it.

snap on were very competeive but they wanted all the vat paid upfront.

Still getting quotes from various companys.snap-on have given a good quote and yes they do want the vat paid as deposit.They are only offering a 1 year guarantee where some others are offering 2-3 years.im a bit worried that after 1 year they wont want to know.i am still in talks with vosa but they dont seem to work to fast.will keep you informed.
