Its that time of year again got my renewal through from axa and gone up again can any body recomend a good company so i can get another quote to compare

I have just spent the last 2 weeks trying to sort out motor trade insurance.After 35 years in the business,I thought this would be a fairly straightforward operation,but it appears that a lot of companies have stopped doing motor trade cover.I found the on-line companies are a complete waste of time as they have no knowledge of the industry and what is reqd of a person involved with repairing cars etc.However, I did manage to sort out some cover to my needs through these people.

Just wondered if you deal directly with Axa or through a broker? I only mention this because I insure directly with them and deal with a dedicated Rep from Axa. I have always found them willing to negotiate on price each year so have not found it worth changing. I do have a colleague who is going through the 'ritual' of trying for an alternative quote at the moment and he is finding it hard going!

I have also spent the last couple of weeks trying to sort out my insurance with AXA. Like you Colin I have always had a dedicated rep who has called round, discussed my needs and then negotiated a price. I have always been happy with this and not found it worth trying to change companies.

This year the rep has been finished and I now have to deal direct via mail or phone. The first problem was a new government regulation about employees, If you want them on your employers liability you have to give their national insurance numbers and all other info or they will not be covered (I assume to try and stop illegals and cash in hand types). Next big problem for me was - I have always had several of my own motorbikes covered for SDP but this year they will not cover 2 out of 3 at all and the other (1100 Yamaha) they will cover but want an extra £500 excess (already on £500)and an extra £270 on the premium. They did suggest I took my bike business elsewhere.

As I pay monthly they wanted 10% interest, this has always been negotiated down to 3% but this year I find that the woman dealing with my policy does not have the authority to reduce this.

All in all it has gone up around £300, I have lost cover on three bikes and have to pay 7% extra interest for monthly payments.

I did get another very competitive quote but when you read all the small print like
a) all oily rags to be removed from the building daily
b) no overnight battery charging
c) no cellulose paint to be used or stored
d) no more than 9 Ltrs of fuel to be stored
e) all electrical installations to be tested at least every 3 years
f) no woodworking by power to take place
etc etc

So in the end I just gave up and paid up to AXA (now around £300 per month).

I had my rep 'removed' and I was told to deal directly with their office at renewal a couple of years back. I spoke to him and he wanted to carry on but said his hands were tied but if I cared to tell axa that I wanted his services they would transfer my account back to him! I duly told their office this and sure enough they transferred me back. I have to say I was most amazed that it happened. He said at the time they were trying to move the smaller accounts away from the reps.
As I don't employ the employers liability hasn't affected me. I did argue a point about driving other vehicles not owned by me for sd & p for both myself and my wife which they did cover for an extra £100.00. Handy if I borrow my son's vehicles or my wife has to drive her fathers car.
It really is a mine field though and I dread it each year at renewal time.
My son runs a policy which is slightly different in that he deals with both road and race Caterham 7's, both at his premises and various tracks and the specialist insurers do seem to have a grasp on his needs. I did try them for myself but as I have no 'race' requirements they were not interested.

Hi all,

I have premises and employees, I'm insured by Allianz with RMi discount paying around £4k a year but unfortunately had a £7k write off claim last year so dreading my renewal in May.

I am going to try the UKAT recommended peeps Peter has suggested, I would also like to get the reps/assesor out to have a look round this year as reading the small print it states things like all windows must be secured with security grills, all electrics to be tested etc etc which mine aren't.

I will let you know how I get on...

We are with Aviva and have been for many years. We use a broker but every year shop around with other brokers and insurance companies.
Be very careful, we have had quotes that leave us very under insured just to get our business, you will only find out if you need to claim.
Our broker spends an hour each year checking our details and anything that might have changed. I wouldnt want to do it on my own.
We have a combined motor trade policy, all risks, 6 employees and pay approx £3500 plus vat.

I have a rep from a local broker come and sit with me for an hour or more each year to go through everything and we have discussed handtools and scanners/laptops in depth as i know of a garage who were done over and had only insured hand tools which it turned out to be spanners and contents of a toolbox. He lost all his code reading equipment, fortunately he did not have much, but thats not the point.

I specify handtools and computer equipment and any specialist tools seperately, extra work for the rep but he is more than happy as we are then certain to be covered.

with reference to hand tools we all have smart phones nower days with cameras i take a photo of each draw of my roll cabs and diagnostic equipment every year so its up to date and if any thing goes missing i can tell whats in every draw

I've been with NIG for several years.
I, too, have a broker (personal friend) who comes round every year to go through the policy. I have a declaration policy so i have to upgrade new employees, new personal cars and bikes, etc.
It works for me.

It's that time of year again for all the hassle with insurance.

Had two brokers this year that could not get me cover without lots of requirements such as all tool boxes to be chained to wall, all cutting gear like oxy bottles to be locked in a separate place (to prevent cutting chains holding toolboxes), all tools on shadow boards have to be locked away, all boxes of timing belt tools etc have to be locked away, all car keys to be taken home or locked in a safe, got to provide dates of last 5 yearly electrical safety test and date of last pat testing. It went on and on.

Axa, my existing company have not insisted on any of this but have included a leaflet with my renewal that clearly states that I should comply with all HSE guidelines regarding electrical testing and pats testing.

How do you lot go on doing these tests? HSE say if you employ less than 5 there is no legal requirement, but if you had an electrical fire where would you stand if you had not done the tests?

To cap it all, I lost my driving license at Christmas for 12 months thanks to DVLA not taking the recommendations of two doctors and a consultant and then just ticking a box and sending the letter. Wonder why I bother sometimes

Am a bit surprised by some of your premiums...

We have a 4 bay workshop, a separate sales site with space for up to 20 cars and a stock value up to £Xk, another smaller building/workshop and 5 employees. We offer loan cars and unaccompanied sales test drives. We are covered for work interruption on a reasonable turnover.

We pay less than £XXX/month for our AXA premium all in, including plant inspections and a X% finance charge on the direct debit (which of course they can authorise if they so choose).

Having said all this I can say that I probably spend an entire working week per year sorting it out and am currently paying the same premium as I paid 8 years ago. It is probably the single most productive week I have per year considering what I save.

We renewed on the 1st January with AXA. The past couple of years we have been with AXA direct but this year went with Aston Scott brokers (who are nationwide) who quoted us a cheaper AXA premium. At the moment AXA direct and other AXA brokers are trying to undercut each other so it could be a good time to try to get a quote with them. I've find AXA to be a top notch company, although we were with Commercial Union/CGU/Norwich Union/Aviva for twenty odd years and they were pretty good too.

we have just changed company last year with nig through a broker, the broker phoned me a week ago to tell me he was looking at getting me the best price,the policy runs out tommorrow but in the mean time another broker came in £500 cheaper with liverpool victoria for same policy so gone with him, what annoys me is the first broker was leaving it to the last minute to phone me with prices, if he wants my business that bad he should be ringing me at the end of january and not leaving it to the last minute

We have been quoted £2,100(ish) from AXA. We are just a small garage (3 bay) with a small forecourt and carry little or no stock.

I am trying to equate Barnaby's premium with ours - not sure ours looks good in comparison

.

I did contact a broker, who advised us to stick where we are though.

Ian, I have just paid around £3,000 including the engineering insurance and had two brokers say stay with your existing insurer (Axa).
I work by myself, 1600sq ft garage (£145,000), and small forecourt, £4,000 stock, 5 vehicles on MID (around £14,000 total value) with myself, my wife and now my son driving for business use, tools, equipment and public liability etc

So, I think you are doing OK compared to mine.
