Body control module reconfiguration #

Having just finished my second body control module reconfiguration of the week. Where numerous people have been evolved and thousands of pounds spent in labour charges and sending various control units off for immobiliser deactivation and weeks off the road.

I am just wondering how many people get feed up with the trade that refuses to invest in training and good quality equipment to carry out investigations and repair. Of what is normally a simple fault. Do we embrace them as a good source of income or lobby for technician licencing. My last customer had effectively spent £3000 to cure a central locking fault.

As a dealer it can be just as bad "my mate down the pub/google/ brother in laws mothers' dog said" so just fit part, I don't want to pay diagnosis. Then they moan when it doesn't fix.

Just yesterday, a semi-auto Fusion has been diagnosed as needing a TCM relearn/update. The ecu has been reworked by ATP for another garage, after that the car won't start.

Actual fault, the selector shaft is seized. 10 minutes and the selectors work, car now starts. However the TCM has no comms, so what/who's to blame. Owner says he's not paying us to diagnose, but doesn't want to pay us for getting running either, as we haven't fixed the transmission fault!

Guess he won't be getting his car back then....

Those semi-auto tcm modules are quite annoying. ECU Testing.com say just to bleed them and all will be fine.

From my experience of fitting them after repair is not how they say. You bleed them with a power bleeder but you still can't select gears. The only way I've found is either a complete relearn which then runs the risk of completely failing or a clutch set point learn.

If you do a bleed option using ids then it does a transmission relearn as well and with the warning note attached from ecu-testing.com it clearly states not to do this.

So unless you have a tool capable of carrying out a clutch set point learn then I don't see how it works.

I've done two for my self and one for another garage, we all had the same problem (couldn't engage a gear without serious gear crunching) but a clutch set point relearn cures them.

We see this most of the time, done the rounds money wasted then ends up coming to us to sort out the shit. Customer at this time totaly pissed off and thinks you are trying it on. Last week golf recovered to us none start been to another garage had tank fuel pump fitted still no start. Blown fuse for pump, fitted new fuse and off it went.

So yes we see this as a good source of income, this is what happens when trying to save a few quid.

Hi Paul, What vehicle was it and why do you think it needed re configuring. ? had it lost the configuration or had someone changed it. ?

We have had a few VW's with faulty convenience units where it can be changed to single stage locking to get it working again and PSA group vehicles where flat batteries have caused issues.

A growing number of people shop around for the cheapest price. They usually get the standard of workmanship they deserve.
Lack of investment in training and equipment is not restricted to the motor trade. It's an issue which affects everything from medicine and policing to plumbing and aviation.

Hi all this is a good one,
Customer brings car in for MOT and it fails on emissions she asks me "what can be wrong".i tell her to book it in for a hours diagnostic session at £36 plus vat. She goes away for a week then comes back and asks for another emissions test as another garage have read the codes and replaced the front O2 sensor. It obviously fails the test and she gives in and books it in with me. For starters the code I get is for the rear sensor not front, but it's down to cat efficiency and i noticed oil in water so put my head gasket tester on and gasket has failed.

They seem to enjoy wasting money, but then there quick to say I,m expensive

Â£36+vat isn`t expensive for an hour Shane.

The average in Fishguard is £30 and there not vat registered. So £36 plus vat is £12 more. Not being big headed but we try and work of quality and not price.
