Telematics - Good or Bad? a Spy in your car? #

We know it's coming and will probably have some benefits (probably for the Dealers) but should the Dealers be invading your private life?

The Telematics technical data is fine, but the location services should be optional, activated only in an emergency

Where will all this data be stored? who will it be sold onto? where you go, where you shop, other dealers you visit

Hello Peter,
I personaly do not like the way things are going even on the points you have raised alone

The more I think about it the less I like it.

It could turn basically all Law abiding citizens into over night criminals, ie the little blip of the throttle and the car grasses you up for speeding

Insurance companies finding the smallest reason for not honouring a claim.

In car cameras. Facing inwards looking at you picking your nose (driving without due care)

Take away supper with the missus/girlfriend

Ransom-ware your car / manufacturer

This could just be an age thing and the youngsters may love it but Big Brother will know more about you than you would like or even be aware of.

I'm sure if I ever had to own a vehicle of the now/future with this type of technology I would just have it on a lease type deal as I would never feel it was really mine .

Could go on ,,,,,,,,,,,but I won't

I am sure as others have pointed out this is the way things are heading, this way they control who can do what to your car (or rather there car), an interesting thought for anyone in doubt my prediction is by 2018 40-50% of cars will be lease only....

now I am sure many will say not possible but just imagine the following scenario:

You goto buy a car you have 6 models in mind from 4 oem's, you say to the salesman "I want to buy this one" and he replies sorry sir that model is only available on lease, "what about that one", sorry sir that model is only available to lease, you head to another dealer and the same applies and so on...... now ask yourself do you lease the car YOU want or buy a car you DON'T want

The future .............. Home owner ship too expensive so people are trapped into renting

I also think leasing will become the norm as the general public will not want to purchase these new vehicles when they realize how much they are going to depreciate.

I will guess that the life of the vehicle in the near future will be less than 5 years as they become to expensive to repair once out of warranty.

There are some good points to the leasing of vehicles.... we get a lot of work from leasing companies that don't like the dealers prices.

And that Antony is why I think this trade is in for a BIG wakeup call, I am 99% certain that no aftermarket tools will beable to do anything worth mentioning diagnostically, dealers can't handle the workload they have just now, so who will the fleet/lease guys be referred to? Then we have many big organisations all suddenly gaining Trading Standards Approval, the RMI about to launch 2 new services at the end of the year (security accreditation & diagnostics diplomas) if you read the wording used for the latter it makes it very clear it's suited for those willing to invest and stay in front of the latest technology, that hints to me that if you don't have the proper diagnostic tools in place you need not apply, and I will not be surprised if fleet ect start demanding only such approved, accredited and properly equipped companies will be allowed to work on there cars, or could all be a load of propaganda lol
