MOT id cards #

Having just read the email with regards to the introduction of the new cards..
The question that springs to mind is how does it generate a new PIN every 30 seconds and from where..

The number generated may well be random, but how does that tie in to the system..
Does it come with its own site modem?
I assume there must be some communication between the card and the mot admin.
Should that be the case, does it have its own comms ie wifi enabled or independantly transmits data via the "force"
If this is the answer then does it know where you ARE and WHEN
I dont have a problem with this during mot's but I sure as hell would have at any other time or place.

It's an algorithm generated code. When you receive the card, you'll either have to add in a code from the back of the card or DVSA will have already added it to your information.
When you press the button, the card generates a number from the algorithm which DVSA will know came from your card.

Wonder how long it will take for some spotty faced geek to sort that one out.
Perhaps we will move on to DNA after that.
What about if all VTS's had a book with certificates in and we filled one out and signed it at the time of the test, would that work...lol

More money wasted like a username password and 6 digit pin number isnt secure enough.

Present system isn't really that secure.
My bank and building society have been using this system for online banking for a few years now.
To be honest, whatever you might think of the DVSA, they aren't so daft as to waste money where they don't need to. It's a necessary upgrade.
As for paper certificates, they were about as secure as chocolate handcuffs. Who enjoyed writing out the VT12 every month?

tom how can a login username, password including random capital letter and a 6 digit pin number not be secure?? paypal have less security than that. i think they are spending a "budget" so they get same amount next year. they must be saving MILLIONS now they arent suppling any supplies ie printers computers and huge amounts of paper / postal costs.

Hi chaps this might be the start of thinning out mot garages,more rules and regs perhaps to get rid of certain garages.who knows ???

I agree that security is an issue But they seem to have completly overlooked the most obvious.
When we had tickets in general both the car and the tester where at the VTS at the time of the test,
I wouldnt be supprised to find out some are done in McDonalds or down the pub for that matter..
So much for "special cards"

or more often the 'tickets' where down at the pub but not with the 'tester' because they had been 'stolen'.!

we foiled 3 attempts to steel test certs from our garage, at some considerable risk to our self's (i.e. a thugs waving a Bar & sledgehammer)

We have not had one attempt on workshop since, getting ride of paper certificates was the best thing that out from a security point.

It was explained to me why the present system isn't fully secure. I'm just not geeky enough to give an good explanation, but it did make sense at the time.
As for issuing documents from somewhere other than the test station, DVSA do monitor IP addresses and will ask for reasons if a different one to the VTS shows up on the test log.
