Forgot to post the fix 
Turned out i had a broken wire on the knock sensor that was 'triggering' the misfire codes - replaced the knock sensor (precutionary measure as it looked a bit old and you have to remove the whole inlet manifold to get at it) and repaired the wiring and car now all sorted and running OK (for now....).
