Try doing a compression test like already mentioned, the v 8 engines had problems with the plating on the bores deteriorating, try a vaccum guage in the manifold and see what you have,a good engine 21 inches of mercury .
If vaccum low possible causes cam timing out or piston ring seal problem as long as there are definatly no inlet manifold leaks.
