Hi Pete The signal for spark comes from the hall sensor you found on the cam cover I have often found broken earths on these low down on bulkhead at back of engine On the hall sensor I think centre is signal and 12v and earth either side I have more info at work will revise tomorrow and post or if stuck give me a call on 01284 828421
