Finally had time to sort this. Both the fuel pumps fitted (from a well known European car parts supplier) were faulty. Fitted a genuine VW pump and everything is fine. Bit of a lesson learned, but you don't really expect to have 2 new units with the same fault. Thanks for your replies Mark.
