VW Golf V5 AGZ 2.3 2000 - Cuts out after 2 / 3 miles and re-starts - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2000
Engine Size and Code *: AGZ - 2300cc
( Optional ) Scanner Used: KTS, Snap-ON
( Optional) Fault Codes: None

Hi all, had this brought into us by the RAC as a non starter. Replaced fuel pump and it started straight up. Drives for about 2 to 3 miles and engine cuts out, coast to a stop & wait a few seconds and it starts straight up again. It will then repeat this process again. Thought we maybe had a faulty pump so have replaced it with another, but still exactly the same. Have also tried a new pump relay. I'm suspecting the ECU as they're know for water ingress, but there are no fault codes stored. Before we send it away I was wondering if anyone else had experienced a similar problem.

Have you proved that the pump supply is at fault?
ie is the cutting out due to the ECU turning off the relay?

Thanks for your reply Mark. It's what appears to be happening. The continuity from the relay to the pump is good & it seems the relay just switches off. We're thinking that something inside the ECU is reaching a certain temperature causing it to switch off.

Hi Ian,

Prove it with a bulb. First fit the bulb between 87 and earth, then road test.

If that proves you are right then fit a small bulb between 85 and 86 and test again, this will tell you what side of the relay is dropping out.

You could do the same with a scope and forget the bulbs, it's just what ever is easier for you.

Finally had time to sort this. Both the fuel pumps fitted (from a well known European car parts supplier) were faulty. Fitted a genuine VW pump and everything is fine. Bit of a lesson learned, but you don't really expect to have 2 new units with the same fault. Thanks for your replies Mark.

Never fit parts from a well known European car parts supplier, their failure rate for even "genuine" parts is way above normal.
