    Thanks for you r replies!
This morning i have had a bit of time to do some more checks. It started this morning (just)without the wd40,but this could have been what was left it it from last night, but i can't remember whether i was just about to start when i got interrupted or not.Anyway i checked the crank sensor signal this morning which just seemed to give a lot of noise,i then started the engine & checked again & seem to be getting no signal(or a very low one),so i thought that my scope may be playing up again, because it's been doing some strange things over the last couple of days.I decided to undo the cas to see if it would continue to run after it had been started. The cas securing bolt head had been rounded off,so it took me 3/4 of an hour to get it undone. When i pulled the sensor out the engine stopped as expected, then i examined it & found that it was bent & had been hit with what looks like a chisel.I measured the cas & checked the reference in the fuelparts book & noted that the one listed for the Octavia had a different connector. After measuring the cas it is obviously the wrong one as it will not fit right into the orifice where it's meant to.I am now waiting for the customer to bring in the cas that was fitted to the engine(with the different connector).
I suspected the immobiliser because there was a key fault listed in the dashboard ecu(instrument panel)& the customer said that the key warning light had been flashing, then he said that one of the keys was faulty after having been dropped.I now realize after researching a bit more, that there is no immobiliser in this pump (sorry for making that mistake) and that a lot of people must have looked at my original post & thought that this idiot (me) doesn't know what he's doing.I don't deal with diesels much & have now learnt something new.
Sorry for the long post,i will hopefully post a fix soon & to answer one of the questions ,the engine previously in the car was running ok before & i think they said that it was changed because they mucked up the timing when changing the timing belt & did some damage(ooops!)
