    Ford Focus 1999 1.8td DTi - Non start after broken cambelt / head rebuild Archived Message

    got a focus in with a cam belt failure (tension dropped off the belt and the timing went out of sink) rebuilt the head and replaced the belt, tensioner etc, primed the fuel pump and bled the fuel up to the injectors but it will not start. plenty of fuel to the pump and a healthy delivery to the injectors if I crack the pipes off on cranking, valve timing is spot on. got several fault codes but some relate to the fact that the plug for the ERG valve is missing and the wires are just insulated (had a 2nd hand engine fitted last August elsewhere), fault code P0110 – air intake temp sender fault shows -40 deg all the time, P1608 – pump/injector control unit signal fault, PP1206 – injection control. if I clear the fault codes the permanent ones that can not be erased are the ERG fault codes and the intake air temp but on cranking the pump/injector code comes back and also a code for an internal error for the control unit (sorry can’t remember the code off hand) I also had a fault code for the crank sensor but that only came up once and has not appeared since. checked for live and earth at the plug on the pump and power at the ECM, check the power relays by earthing pins 70 and 96 at the ECM plug and they both work, check the std stuff first as in fuses, relays, connections etc. The general condition of the car is poor to say the last, it’s in a horrible state, oil all over the engine bay from a breather has that’s never been fitted, never seen a service but the pump does look like it has been changed at some time but I suspect it was changed from the old engine to the replacement one, oh and the imo light goes out so I don’t think it imo related.

    Any ideas would be nice as I’ve only just given up for the day in frustration (1am), the guys expecting the car back on Monday, he’s a new customer and possible the most obnoxious man I’ve spoken to on the phone in recent memory----not what I want on Monday morning
