VW Polo 1.6 AEA 1995 - Headgasket replaced now non start #Archived Message

Hi All, This apparently has done the rounds, starting with a head gasket replacement, then no start, removed by customer to current garage who retimed it, ran OK, but had it fail while driving and now no start again! Enter me! Just chugs and chuffs (that's the car, not me). Oh... kept coming up with code (00515) for hall sensor so distributor replaced twice by garage. I checked output from this, which was fine, and then spotted in Autodata that always flags this up if engine not running! Drive to coil and fuel injector OK. Fuel pressure about 1 bar (in spec.) and something coming out of the return. And won't start on Easy Start! Briefly checked timing and appeared OK, but didn't take off bottom cover to check mark on timing belt pulley (just mark on 'outer' pulley). Compressions, particularily on 1 & 2 take 10-12 pulses to come up to proper pressure (160ish psi). Didn't know you had to open throttle to do this, but always worked before. Believe should be 4-6 pulses? Is this indicative of a mechanical problem?? Removed O2 sensor and still no start. Recommended check for play in crank and cam pulleys/shafts. Having read archives will suggest changing leads as well! Grateful for any replies! Regards, Nick Bell
