Peugeot 206 Engine HFX (and fix) Archived Message

    Hi All,
I've just fixed this one and I think my results may be of value to other UKAT members:-
The car came in with MIL lamp on and occasional lack of power.
    Diagnosis gave:-
    0204 Injector 4 circuit.
    0326 Knock sensor.
Reset the codes, sure enough came straight back.
Testing was difficult because of a preformed wiring loom for the injectors and poor access.
Removed fuel rail and injectors and did a resistance check. I found one was different to the other three, but it was the timing belt end that was different (I know Renault number their engines backwards but thought Peugeot did it conventionally).
I talked to the Tech help for one of my diagnostic computers and the guy thought the difference was too small to bother the ECM.
But smelling a rat I tested the injectors with an inductance meter and the results were quite startling, see the table below:
    Cylinder Resistance Inductance
    1 12.1 Ohms 00.18 mH
    2 14.2 Ohms 14.28 mH
    3 14.3 Ohms 14.07 mH
    4 14.4 Ohms 14.30 mH
    Flywheel end
So apart from the fact that Peugeot either number from the flywheel end or they got it wrong diagnostically.
Although the faulty injector was only 2 Ohms or 15% less than the good ones the inductance value was completely destroyed which means the injector current would have gone through the roof.
I'm sure it would have shown up with scope testing but I can't afford a Pico at the moment and finding a measuring point would have been difficult I think.
I know many UKAT members would not have an Inductance (LCR) meter but it shows that having one may not be a bad idea.I have long had an opinion that resistance testing wound items is of limited value (except of course for an open circuit) and I feel this is a case in point. It was nice to have the other injectors to compare to but the same could be said of ABS sensors and I think crank sensors could also be tested this way.
Hope this is of value to someone in the future.
    Shaun.
