    Hi Andrew,I think that the needle lift sensor should be about 100 ohms. ( According to Autodata, using a totally different vehicle, as the 406 isn't listed ) So it sounds as though yours is Knack-er er faulty.
    Anyway, don't worry about why or how it works, if it's faulty, just fit a new one, and hopefully it will cure all your problems in one go. ( fingers crossed )
