Toyota Corolla 1300CC 4E-FE 1999 twin coils - Running very badly, rev angine and backfires Archived Message

    Hi TECHS,
this car is running very badly and misses. Sometimes when you rev the engine it backfires through the inlet. I'd change the coils and leads only for the fact that the HC measures around 196ppm (it varies slightly). Is this sound diagnosis to disregard the ignition system because the HCs are correct?
The CO is very low but the oxygen measures 2.5-3% and the Lambda is 1.11. This to me indicates a lean misfire but I can't find any data on the MAP sensor or coolant sensor values in any of my books. The oxygen sensor switches perfectly. I know the coils give trouble on these but would the HC remain correct and would the O2 be high in that situation?
Thanks very much for yourtime and effort.
    Regards Eamonn
