BMW 318 Ci 2.0 2002 - Non start, multiple fault codes - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2002 Engine Code or Type *: 2.0 16v N42B20A ( Optional ) ECU Type: ME9 ( Optional ) Scanner used: Modis
Hi all, Hope someone might be able to shed some light on this. This was towed in this evening as a non starter,code read showed up several faults, P2781 CAMSHAFT SENSOR-INLET, P2731 FUNCTION,CAMSHAFT CONTROL,INLET, P2782 CAMSHAFT SENSOR,EXHAUST, P27C1 ALL CAMSHAFT SENSORS FAILED, P2866 VARIABLE VALVE GEAR-LEARNING STOPS NEEDED. The oil level was low,i topped it up and it started and ran ok.After a test drive i put it up and let the oil (very murky) draining overnight. Would lack of oil or poor oil quality cause all these fault codes ? I will post more tomorrow when i drive it again. Any input much appreciated as i am not too familiar with these engines or the VVT system Thanks in advance. Dave.

Hi Dave , im not into Bm's but have you had a look at valve timing
Hi John, Thanks for the reply,i did think of valve timing but the customer told me that this happened very suddenly,driving 100% to the shop and when he came out it would not restart,so i thought it was more of a sensor fault. I got 2 new sensors,as they are problematic on this model,and it made no difference.I have arranged to borrow the timing chain locking tools so i can check the valve toming.(i have heard that this engine is prone to breaking timing chain guides) I will post my findings. Hi lads, After driving again with the new oil and filter it was no better, and still with the same fault codes,i decided to check the valve timing. The timing chain guide was broken in several places causing the timing to slip bout 3 teeth (cogs).Reset the timing with the tool,couldnt do it without it,and its now back to itself. Nice handy job and a good earner too ! Thanks for the help.
