Vauxhall Zafira 1.8 16v 2002 - MOT emission failure, Lambda to high - Fixed #

( Optional ) Scanner used: dec and tech2

Hi this is weird I have a vau zafira 1.8 16 v it failed the mot on to high a lamba reading
Co 0.00
H/c 10 ppm
Lamba 1.14 to much oxygen in the exhaust
The customer replaced the oxygen sensor but still the same, replaced the air mass meter with a genuine Vauxhall unit and the co then went to 7 % and hcs to 280 ppm? Phoned Vauxhall to check I had the correct part and they also replaced the meter, still the same have any of you had this same problem got the car back Friday to go deeper into finding what’s wrong. There is a lack off power when the car is cold and when they floor the throttle which points to a worn air mass, the coolant sensor works fine. Ray

Any leak in the exhaust after the O2 sensor? That would cause high lambda on the MOT test, but not necessarily the poor running....

Hi

I agree with Sean, Exhaust leak is most often the cause of this.

Have you cross checked with another gas tester ? As these also can give incorrect result if pipe is leaking or probe not fully in exhaust.

We would partly restrict exhaust round probe with bit of rag And check again, to eliminate air ingress in this area

I am sure the mot would have picked up exhurst leak [not done by me] and why when I change the air mass does the c/o go the 8% thats whats got me. ray

Hi Ray

Is this a Z18XE

Take a look at the O2 sensor output & fuel trims, the O2 sensor will be flat lined rich & trims at maximum.

You need to reset the adaptions, the ecu has adapted to the old MAF.

I have been in exactly the same situation myself and it was resolved using Vaux Com, special funcions, ( I can't remember the exact text but obvious when you read it ). HTH

So how do you tell your customer that his car has failed the MOT exhaust emissions check because it is hoovering up all the nasty stuff emitted by other people and producing too much oxygen?

I agree with Glyn, fuel trims should give a clue.

Having said that, you will be surprised how small a leak you need to upset the lambda reading, so you need to check that.

Very unlikely. Air leaks can suck air in without blowing, so under normal mot checks it might not show up.

Blank off the tailpipe whilst someone looks around for leaks, then bung them up till you get the readings sorted.

And as Said before, Reset Adaptions whenever possible, otherwise you end up causing a different problem.

ok got car back, there is no exhurst leak, got my hands on a astra 1.8 and tryed its air mass on my zafira and still got these very high gas readings, tryed the new air mass on the astra & gas readings perfect, checked wiring and all looks sound so I am after a ecu part no 55.351.703 siemens ms 71 unit and is fitted across th ranger of most 1.8. & 2.2 vauxhallls
the gas readigs are

old air mass at fast idle/ new airmass
c/o 0.01 c/o 5.54
h/c 6ppm h/c 119
co2 10.6% co/2 10.3
0/2 2.96% o/2 0.28
lamba 1.2 lamba 0.86
if you can help on a ecu the No is 01827311332 ring anytime. ray
