Volkswagen Golf GTi AUM 2001 - Fault codes 17705 & 16514 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2001
Engine Code or CC *: AUM
( Optional ) Scanner Used: VCDS

This car is now driving me crazy!
Initial codes:
17705 Pressure drop between turbo and throttle valve.
16514 Oxygen sensor B1 S1 malfunction in circuit.
Initial checks showed a split breather pipe and as I took the 16514 code to be a sensor switching issue I thought I'd cracked it.
Next day light on again.
Roadtested with VCDS in situ, seemed to have good mixture control but engine temp was dropping off to 70 degC when car was moving. New thermostat fitted and temp stayed at 90-92 degC
Next day light back on again! 16514 code only now. Checked code in depth to realise on this car it signifies HEATER fault. Took a chance fitted new lambda sensor, guess what, next day light back on yet again.
Looking in measuring block 41 there is no value displayed for heater resistance. My thoughts are that there is a wiring loom fault, I can see some white deposits on the loom near the ECM but whether they signify a corroded wire I can only tell by opening the loom up.
Typically the owner works across the road from me, she is a very pleasant person but english is not her first language so communication is a little difficult at times, just the situation where I would like a straightforward fix!
Any ideas or magic bullets welcome.

You already narrowed it to the heater circuit Shaun, so what tests have you done on the heater circuit?

None so far except to confirm that the heater on the old sensor was ok at 3.1 Ohms (didn't know at time of changing what pins the heater was on.
I could do with a circuit diagram ( engine code AUM) as it is not on IDC Lite. Normally I double check everything but the moment I took a chance it all went horribly wrong.
I don't know if there is a separate relay for the sensor heaters, I suspect not.
It may or may not be relevant but the heater resistance for sensor 2 was reporting in the region of 200 Ohms and now will not display a value at all. My gut feeling is that there is a common ground or supply that has failed.
I was wondering if there was a known common problem (euphemism for magic bullet).

First thing to check then is amps through the heater and depending on the results from that the power supply to the unit then.
Dont need a wiring diagram for basics like this, heater circuit on old sensors is one of the white wires, on newer 5/6 wire sensors just look at the wire thickness from the car to the 02 multi-plug. There will be two wires thicker than the others, these are the heater circuit wires (higher current).
Amps clamp or at least check the power,then the control side.

Thanks Sean,
But I think this one has gone well beyond the basics now. The heater is not just a continous drive on this car, it is PWM driven by the PCM.
I can knife-and-fork it but a circuit diagram would save me searching down every pin on the PCM and would enable me to check where the supply is coming from. What makes testing even harder is that the multiplug is under the car floor and is not accessible from under the bonnet.

Ok, but if you haven't even tried the basic's yet how do we know this?

Yes it is,again a very basic system to check.

You are looking for a wiring diagram which is fair enought, but what I was saying was you can cut the possible causes of this fault in more than half in under 10 mins (including access underneath). This would put you much closer to a repair than you are now and you would have some facts to report to the owner at least.
So instead of asking someone to take 10/15 mins out of their day to help you fix this car why not spend 10/15 mins of your own time and narrow the fault down for yourself?

That new lambda sensor you fitted, was it a genuine one from PTS or a so called genuine from the likes of ECP or GFS.
Measureing OHMs on a heater circuit is only 100% reliable if it is open circuit (fail) on a bench test so original Lambda could have been faulty.

The new item is genuine VAG from TPS and granted the old unit could well go open circuit when hot.

Not quite sure where you are getting your attitude from.
My basic tests found a split breather pipe, a knackered thermostat and a corroded rivet on the secondary air pump (which I forgot to write down). Admittedly I did not check the heater resistance before replacing the unit, if it had a connector under the bonnet I would have, but I have to use the ramp of a friend next door. I do not like to impose on his time too much, so I did not want to put it on his ramp twice.
You say it is a basic system to check but VCDS shows the heater status switching on and off continuously so it is not just fed from the fuel pump relay then. It must therefore be driven by the PCM and testing will be much simpler with the pinout data.
The fault code cleared and did not return on roadtest. I only found out that there was still a problem at 6.00 when the customer came to collect the car on an evening where I had a meeting that I had to be at for 7.30 prompt washed and scrubbed. So no, I have made no further tests on the heater circuit. Sorry for not being perfect, but after 34 years continuous service in industrial and automotive electrical and electronic fault diagnosis and repair I do know the easiest way is with a decent diagram in front of you. The rest of the information I gave is to give UKAT members a full idea of what I had done so far.
I really resent the 10/15 minutes comment. I often spend time looking through my records to get information to help other UKAT members (see my posts about inductance testing if you wish) to me that's what this forum is all about. I only ask for ideas on the ones that have got me a bit foxed. I don't post on the loads of cars I do every week that don't give me big problem. I do only diagnostic and electrical work but I do work on all makes and can't know the idiosyncrasies of every model, so sometimes I ask. Sorry Sean but your attitude makes me feel like I shouldn't have.

Firstly no attitude here,and I'm far from perfect, calm down its not good for the blood pressure.
What you decide to do with any help/info given after you ask for it is up to you, doesn't bother me either way.

Let me just run you through the post from my end,
1 You have identified a fault relating to the 02 sensor heater circuit.

So you have identified a fault that is well beyond the basics without doing any basic testing yet?

I have no problem helping people who have EXHAUSTED ALL TESTING at their end and are looking for some direction, we all hit a brick wall every now and then and this is what the forum is for.

You say you have been in the trade 34 years and now only do only diagnostic and electrical work and 'only ask for ideas on the ones that have got me a bit foxed' yet you have done NO basic tests to this circuit yet and I find it hard to believe you are not capable of this.

My point was that if you're not willing to invest 10/15 mins in basic testing on a car you are getting paid to test why do you think it fair to ask others to give up their time for you?

Thank you for taking the time to reply but on this my perspective is completely different:-
I have already found and repaired three seperate faults on this car. I like to think these were found by basic checks.
The P0130 code in Autodata gives two outcomes and whoops I did not immediately identify it as a heater fault, I made a snap judgment and thought of it as a no activity fault, I think in all honesty I interpreted as a P0170 code, I'll hold my hands up to that one.
It was only when I was half an hour late and trying to get off home that I then identified this REMAINING fault as a sensor heater issue with no time to investigate there and then.
My statement 'Any ideas or magic bullets welcome.' was meant as a little humour, perhaps I should have put it in quotes or popped a smiley on the end. Sometimes there are common problems (corroded wire splices in nearside sills on Audi A4s spring to mind)which after you have spent a great deal of time in investigation turns out that "everybody in the trade knows that". It is just possible that there is an inline splice in the loom splitting the heater supply that corrodes through due to runoff from the windscreen and it is possible that a UKAT member knows this and I don't. I was told "there is no such thing as a stupid question, but the one you didn't ask and should have".
You gave advice on identifying heater wires, to the best of my recollection they are all the same size, on the sensor they certainly are, it is in my hand now. For future information they are the grey and the white wire on pins 3 and 4 of the connector, found this information out later whilst researching the problem (Ilexa forum I think).
I can and will find the fault without a diagram, and could in a field with my swiss army knife and a sidelamp bulb on wires if I had to, but I am not in the habit of making things really hard for myself if it is not necessary.
Useful information you could have provided if you are so knowldgeable on these is whether the heater supply is high side or low side switched, fed from the fuel pump relay or whatever.
You say I am not willing to invest 10/15 mins in testing, as I have said I had no further time at that point and had to let the car go, it's due to get more time on Tuesday.
"EXHAUSTED ALL TESTING" You can spend hours doing that, sometimes it's better to talk to others who will recalibrate your personal compass and get you restarted in the right direction, that's what I thought I was doing.
What I will need to do is get the car jacked up (I don't have a ramp as for 99% of my jobs they are a liability) Put some long test leads on the heater connector and continuity test back to the PCM and supply point, it would just be nice to know where they are.
In the lack of other information I would surmise that the heater live is fed from the fuel pump relay and the ground side is switched through the PCM, do you have anything concrete to add to this?
In hindsight I should have used my normal long-winded and methodical approach of "test every little thing" But as I put at the beginning I was hoping to keep the costs down, c'est la vie.
I always take help and advice, not so keen on slagging off, sorry.

Sorry Kevin, I have IDC Lite (Texa) which honestly is about as much use as a chocolate toothbrush at times. I need to upgrade to something better but a) money is tight at the moment and b) Autodata insist that I have the basic package before I can have the diagrams (or they did last time I asked) I don't need servicing data, it's not what I do, so for me the cost is astronomical.
Best thing would probly be to use Erwin.
Strange thing is, someone enquired about a diagram on UKAT last week and got one posted up (Peter W did it I think). When I asked all I seem to be getting is flak.

i have texa lite truck and if the diagrams are as poor on cars as truck, you really need to spend some money on AD. Vivid or Tolerance.It will be money well spent even if you don,t need some of the info.

Kevin, I do see your point and I do know I will have to upgrade my "information provider" but when it is a choice of £500 a year for information and about the same amount, as it happens, for two of my children's school bus fees, regrettably I have to pay the bus company.
Unfortunately I also feel that we give these companies a full subscription and in return they give us half a service, but that is completely off-topic.Also they draw no distinction about the size of the company using their data i.e. the cost is the same whether it is just me (as it is) or whether I had ten blokes using that information and the cost would then be a much smaller percentage of turnover.

Thats why I said to check the wiring on the car loom side of the 02 multi-plug, you'll see what I mean.

No need, jack the car up,removed the small cover and put an amps clamp over one of the heater wires underneath with the car running. No amps flow then dissconnect the 02 plug and check for a heater circuit power supply, again running. Perm power supply and controlled earth when running.
15 mins tops.

Your comments about ramps being a liability and wiring diagrams too expensive are a joke.

I am constantly amazed by the sniping and the disparaging remarks that appear on UKAT. Personally, I support Shaun who does not deserve the critism that has been levelled at him. I certainly do not think that his attitude STINKS and the remark is uncalled for. I do not know Shaun except to say that he contributes regulary to these forums and tries to help others when he can.

We may not all own the very latest eqipment or have access to all the technical information, but that is no reason to be denigrated in this fashion. If we all had everything that we need, there would be no reason for UKAT.

There are certain members who seem to have a "better than thou" attitude and that is the attitude that STINKS. I was warned about it before I joined and I have never seen such an elitist attitude in such a small community. We are supposed to be here to help each other and not drive people away which I know has happened in the past.

Finally, keep up the good work Shaun and don't the b.....s get you down.

Ramps are a liability and wiring diagrams a too expensive.....??????

I think you have to accept (or need to realise) that some members have exceptional product knowledge & experience. They have little (or sod all) to gain from these forums. To keep these guys interested & prepared to contribute, might take some effort & dare I say "Manners" from those who want some of the crumbs from the table.

You call it elitist, well maybe that is so. There is a natural order in life & some feel more comfortable than others, at their place in this order. It is not always easy to see it, from “ones“ own vantage point!

We all understand what it feels like when someone encroaches on our time, & when it feels like they are "not deserving", it doesn't necessarily sit easy. Sean & Andrew are simply pointing this out. Effort & yes, some degree of respect is required, if the best help is to be forthcoming.

As a blunt example....

When ever I call a colleague for some advice, I always ask if it is convenient to talk. This is not me "sucking up" or "groveling". It is merely manners on my part. I am after all, asking a favour & as such I feel the need to act accordingly. I believe it is called courtesy. It costs nowt & it does go an awful long way!

Regarding the fault. I am sure there has been some useful information posted recently on the subject.

Here we go again!!!!

I have only just noticed this post and am amazed that yet again some well respected members of UKAT are being shot down by others who have no idea of what sound advice they are being given and choose to take it as "Elitist" instead of taking heed and realising they are only trying to help.

UKAT has been established now for almost a decade and for a long time was the only source of information for like minded techs to exchange information and learn from each other. When it was founded it took a long time to get going but with the help of up to 100 regular posters who are now liftime members was regarded as the very best place to learn and develop our technical knowhow and to help to fix those awkward problems.

These Techs deserve respect for that very few of them post now or even bother to read due to too many posts being about a "quick fix" or "silver bullet"

Shaun I think you should lighten up as from my point of veiw Seans advice was sound. I have said it before, On internet forums it is all too easy to totally misinterpret someones intentions or moods then all too quickly a well meaning piece of advice turns into a slanging match.

Pete your comment about being warned about UKAT has probably come from someone else who took umbridge at another well meaning piece of advice.

As dave says there are some exceptional techs on here who deserve respect, there are many techs on here who just because they have paid there annual fee think that they are entitled to the free advice that is offered. but it is given freely by some of the older hands only to people who they think have made an effort to actually test and understand the sytems they are working on.

I appologise if I offend or upset anyone with this post but it needed saying

Hi Dave,

I am well aware that there are a few members with exceptional knowledge and this is one of the reasons I joined. I am also well aware that there are people who are are not fortunate enough to have either the skill, information or technology as the gifted few. There is however no need for rudeness or bad manners to a fellow member.

I have re-read this thread and there is nothing that Shaun has said that deserves the comments that has been made especially when he takes time to help fellow members.

I have seen plenty of bad posts on here and no one is perfect. All it needs is a little bit of patience and education rather than slag some-one off. As I have mentioned before, there are people who no longer use this site because of this which I think is a shame because with the right encouragement they too could become useful contributors.

You still fail to grasp the point.

Those who are in need, should conform.

You are correct when you say..

I think that many top techs post far less than before, mainly due to the "silver bullet" hunters. I have found for myself, that some great advice has been given, when I have made the effort & done some ground work.

It is simply rude to suggest that "I didn't have time" or "testing is harder because the multiplug is under the car floor".

Get real guys, these matters are trivial. If you find it is a stumbling block, that a connection is under the floor & requires a trolley jack, in order to access it, then frankly, you are in the wrong place (in my opinion anyway)

I think if you search the archives, then you will see the quality of the posts from a "by-gone era. Unfortunately UKAT has seen too many instances where folks have paid a princely sum, & have considered that they are entitled to the "holy grail" of knowledge.

It really isn't hard. Post your request for help, in the correct format, with detailed information of tests carried out. Basic etiquette is not too much to ask for surely?

Perhaps it would be a good idea to sit back & study who the good guys are, before slanging matches are entered into. It is not a matter of choosing sides, more so a matter of knowing who to listen to!

I would guess that the 17705 came back and it ended up getting a new diverter valve whatever about the o2 sensor.

I appologise for picking up late on an old thread,but have the same fault 17705,
identical system but have no split breather pipe.
Alan mentions a diverter valve.Where is this situated?does anyone know please?

17705 is a common re-curring VAG fault code, the "silver bullet" is nearly always a throttle body clean and adaption, I have had this on numerous occaisions and it has not failed me yet.

try it and let us all know !!

Did not realise this posting had come back to the top, the ethernet controller on my work PC died and it has taken a few days to get a replacement installed, until now no internet.
Sorry to say that after the pasting I got I vowed not to comment further on this post, however...
Perhaps I put the wrong slant on my post it was at the end of a long and tiring day.
What really got my goat was that members will not actually read posts properly, they gloss over and think they know what has been said.
I got slagged for saying ramps are a liability...I did not say that, what I said was that for me a ramp is a liability most of the time. I am an autoelectrician with a two bay workshop, to have a ramp would get in my way as I mostly need doors wide open to get in the footwells. yes, occasionally a ramp would be a Godsend, mostly it wouldn't.

Anyway to the point...
I pointed out to the customer that I could see white salts leaking out of the loom under the windscreen scuttle area and that a loom fault was likely. She decided that she couldn't wait and booked in with a main dealer, after waiting nearly two weeks they got the same codes I did (big surprise) and diagnosed a loom fault (another big surprise) they repaired the loom apparently which went wrong again, Finally they fitted another engine loom and presented her with a bill in excess of 600 quid. I am sure I would have given her a bill for half of that at the most.
And thank you to all those who supported me here and in PM's.

Hi Shaun,

Good to see that you got a fix on this and posted it here. Know what you mean about ramps - I hate them! When I visit a garage and the car is on a ramp, I get them to move it off because as you say you can't open the doors properly or they end up banging on the ramp posts. Also, when you have to move around the car, I am forever tripping over the ramps. The car tends to be higher up than on a normal level which can cause access problems. My garages now know what the score is when I have to visit them.

Hi Martin,
If I had my own premises I would seriously consider a scissor lift but I am unwilling to pay the money to have something like this fitted in a rented building. I have a friend in the unit next door with a two poster but I am unwilling to keep begging facilities from him without good cause. Mostly I prefer a flat floor.
