Toyota Avensis 1.8 2003 - Code P0420 Cat efficiency - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2003
Engine Size and Code *: 1.800
( Optional ) Scanner Used: modis
( Optional) Fault Codes: p0420

hi guys got a toyota avensis in with p0420 cat efficency stored scoping both oxygen sensors confirms faulty cat normally a straight forward fix, however custumer has been told by dealers that the ecu also needs to be replaced. After a bit of searching on the net i have found the technical service bullitin from toyota has anyone had any experiance just fitting a cat an sensors as changing the ecu seems a bit severe thanks lee

Thanks peter i did read the previous posts earlier but just read them again now i have a little more time, i decided to go with a replacement cat as i am confident it is at fault after a bit of scoping . I will post the result in a couple of days when new cat and sensors arrive, as i said i am confident the cat is at fault but am interested if anyone has ever had to go as far as ecu replacement as toyota advised,thanks again peter for the quick reply

this is just my theory of this (i may well be wrong of course)would it be that the new ecu parameters have been broadened to not flag the code so critically on the lambda reading(not sure if this could not have been done with a remap though)therefore saving toyota hassle of recurring light fault even after new parts have been fitted

Hi Colin
i was thinking along the same lines the technical bulletin i found on the net is dated 2005 so maybe they had a problem with these cars flagging up p0420 when they where only couple of years old and was more down to the parameters being too critical as you say, thanks for the input

I think i Remember a conversation with a Toyota Tech a couple of years ago about this problem and he said that they had widened the parameters to stop the ecu logging P0420, ( new ecu ) So unless the vehicle fails an emnissions test is it really worth replacing the Cat or the ecu as neither are really defective and you could end up changiing both. ??

We have done a few of these cats a while back now, all genuine and not had a problem. The problem is with aftermarket cats flaging P0420. The dealers would re-flash to widen the ECU's parameters but this didn't always work either. I have not heard about the dealer wanting to replacing the ECU's for this problem unless they had or are having the same problem with the genuine one's now. I'll do some ringing around today and find out.

Probably on the late side, but I take it you had asked your customer where they buy their fuel from?

just let you guys know, been a good 5 months now and not had any problems with this, so for the recorded the ecu was not needed in this case just straight forward cat and o2 sensors
