QUIZ - Citroen C3 1.4 2004 code P0170 Fuel trim malfunction #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
Engine Size and Code *: 1.4
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Lexia

We Had this C3 in Yesterday for the engine light stopping on, We could clear the fault code but it would come straight back on after starting. ??

What checks should i have done and how many possibilities are there of things that might cause it to log the code P0170. ??

When I checked, It stated that the Fault code was logged at 0 RPM, at 0 M/Bar Map reading and at - 40 degrees c. ?? I Suspected an ecu fault at first.

I carried out one procedure and it gave me an idea what the problem could be.

So What can cause it to log P0170. ??
And what was the item causing the problem. ??

Faulty coolant temp sensor, ECU ignoring 02 sensor and posting P0170

Right then. This is what I did, I will give my version of the fix and Leave this open for Debate to Anyone that can give a better explanation of what caused the problem.

The Car originally came in for the light turning off and they mentioned that the starter motor was a little noisy and groaned a bit as it was coming out of mesh.

I connected lexia and got the code for fuel trim malfunction, I erased the code, Started the car and the light came straight back on, Which i thought was weird for a fuel trim code, Which i would have expected to come back on after a few drive cycles if a fault was still present. ??

I tried this several times and even tried a different scanner, I also noticed that the codes had been cleared about 21 times previously and most appeared to have been done within the last couple of months. ( possibly thats why it was traded in ). ?

Anyway, I had this silly theory that as it happened immediately on start up and it had a noisy starter motor ( not really excessive and i wouldn't have thought about it unless the customer had mentioned it ) that it could be the cause of the problem. ?

So I Cleared the codes, Bump started the car and the light went out with no stored codes.

We then replaced the starter motor and it started fine and the light stayed out.

I Also checked the Battery and the specific gravities were all over the place, So for good measure we Replaced the battery but the car appeared to be fixed before the new battery was fitted.

So was the starter motor the cause of the light coming back on immediately or was it cured due to the battery disconnection. ?? ( if its due to the battery disconnection, why did the light go out when it was bump started ). ??

with a different problem but caused by a failing battery on a Peugeot 306 which may help other's.

A 2000 year 306 1.4 petrol that wouldn't idle when started of the key unless held at around 1500 rpm for a few seconds.

At 1st i thought it was the idle stepper motor but after replacing with a known good one still no different.

For some reason i decided it sounded a little slow on craning but not to bad, i connected up a jump pack and the idle fault disappeared.

Removed jump pack and fault returned. A new battery was the cure to this fault.

French cars do seem fussy about voltage levels.

not been on line sonot followed this sorry guys, but we had a 206 doing much the same thing light would come on at start up with code for cam sensor which was not fitted on this model it turned out to be the battrey was starting to go downhill, local pug dealer told us they are having lots of low voltage problems causing all sorts of spurious codes if in doubt they fit a new battery.
