Rover 75 1.8T 2002 - Just cut out, no fuel pressure - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2002
Engine Size and Code *: 1.8 turbo
( Optional ) Scanner Used: launch x431

Hi

Car brought in from another garage
customer was driving when it just cut out
he had it recovered to them and they diagnosed no
fuel pressure so they replaced intank pump
still wouldnt start so brought it to us
the symptoms it has is that it will start for approx
5 seconds then it cuts out.

No fault codes stored
it has 4 bar fuel pressure has a spark but is
loosing injector pulse when it doesnt start
have checked wiring to ecu. Have also replaced
ecu with second hand unit and still the same
have checked wiring to all engine sensors and all
checked OK. Replaced crank shaft sensor still the same any

Any ideas would be a help

hi malcolm
thought that at first but according to official
rover workshop document, the immobiliser stops
both spark and injector,plus the immobiliser
wouldnt actually cut the car out when it it started

Is the ECU still fitted in the water trap or is that only the diesels.

Hi. I thought that the crank sensor if faulty would not give spark as well. May be wrong. Is the injectors losing the earth or the live?

hiya
the ecu is still fitted in water trap but this
checked out ok.
have got a free running ecu from ecu doctor on loan
to try and still exactly the same.so this rules out
immobiliser problem
the injectors are loosing the switched earth pulse from ecu.it will start and run for about 5 seconds
and when this happens the injectors work.
when it cuts out the injectors switch off
these dont have a fuel pressure sensor anywhere
do they.is 4 bar pressure ok on these?

I'd suggest a test of the cam sensor and verify the cam belt and timing are OK.

does a faulty cam sensor stop these from starting
i thought the k series ran with cam sensor faults
using launch x431 in live data it says cam/crank sync ok when trying to start
will double check sensor and timing on monday

What about carrying out a volt drop test on the earth that the ECU uses for controlling the injectors?

Do you lose comms when in a non start condition?

Will it keep doing this 5 second start/stop all day or do you have to leave it for a time between starts?

Is the fuel pressure pure fuel and not aerated fuel, have you done a quantity (flow) check?

Have you tried running it off a separate supply?

Did it start doing this over night or is there a history to this vehicle?

Has it got the right oil?

hi mark
when fault happens still get full comms to ecu
it will do the 5 seconds start only once then it just cranks until it is left for some time
will try running off seperate fuel supply on monday
the story i got that it was running fine and then just stopped on him
dont know any history of the car other than the last garage replaced in tank pump because they said it had no fuel pressure

Have you checked the passenger side fuel-tank pot hasn't popped apart?
In case you haven't come across this before, the top section to the pot is a bayonet style fitting to the bottom. Lifting the pot out of the tank you can see a ring halfway down it. Push together and twist clockwise. On occasions the seal inside the pot splits, this iirc used to be available with the internal fuel filter from Rover (if you can find a dealer).

finally got this sorted

Sourced second hand ecu/immobiliser/key
fitted parts and started and ran straight away
