Seat Leon 1.6 16v 2001 - Idle adaption fault - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2001
Engine Size and Code *: 1600 BCB
( Optional ) ECU Type: Marelli 4MV with KW1281 protocol
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Vag Com

This car came in as a "just" job on Thursday. The customer just wanted the engine light reset as he way selling it the next day..... Anyway, investigating the fault revealed fault codes 17989 - Throttle actuator basic settings not performed and 17950 - Angle sensor 1 implausible. It turns out that the throttle body is spotless and the wiring has been played with.

I've tried to re-adapt the throttle body using channel 060 but it just reports Error in field 4. The problem is that the other fields are not displaying the same data as shown on ross tech etc. My first field shows Load - 7.0%, the second one shows Load - 93% and the third field shows Units - 2.

The Throttle sensor voltages seem correct at KOEO sensor 1 - 4.3v and sensor 2 0.99v. The throttle butterfly works on an actuator test.

I've now tried a new throttle body in case the old one had been forced open, but it still refuses to complete the adaption and continues to report Error.

I'm stuck now!

Hi mate. i dont think you can reset the throttle body addaptions if there are any fault codes even just one that says basic seting not done, and you have more than that. I think you will need a throttle body. try euro car parts they can get gen vdo ones a lot less than dealer or actronix can repair most of them. Of course even cheeper options maybe JUST to expensive for yor customer.

This is after a new throttle body from Euro's was fitted but I still have exactly the same problem. I clear the fault codes before attempting a re-adaption which leaves only the first fault code about self adaption not carried out. The implausible signal code only returns when I start the engine.

Peter,
I had a polo some time ago,which I could not carry out adp.Not sure of fault code,checked temperature in measuring blocks and found to be reading low,New temperature sensor fitted and adp.problem solved.Maybe worth checking.

Thanks for the reply Christy but I have checked the temperature reading which is correct and it would log the following fault code if its too cold.

17962 - Throttle Actuator (J338)
P1554 - 35-00 - Conditions for Basic Settings not Met

Kevin - the throttle body is a VDO unit which I assumed would be OE quality. Do you know otherwise?

All i can say is i will not use ECP, i have seen far to many of their "genuine" parts, which other garage,s have fitted, go wrong or be unable to program.

I,m sure they have been fined for selling fake parts, and border control have caught them with illegal,s immigrants working for them.

Kev, I think that may be a topic for another discussion

. I too have had quite a few problems with previously fitted parts from not only ECP but main dealers as well. This was a sealed box with no signs of the throttle body being fitted before.

The main point is that the voltages that I get out of both throttle body position sensors are identical and both throttle butterflies work when carrying out an actuator test so I believe that this is a possible ECU/software error now. I've since carried out an ECU reset to factory defaults and now have the same problem trying to adapt the EGR valve. This also just comes up with an error when attempting an adaption.

Hmmm perhaps some-one had already fitted a fake part !

Genuine looking parts and packaging is BIG business in India. Partially filed out dealer logo,s (VW, merc star etc.)is another rouse to make a fake look genuine.

Hi again. I had an old passat yesterday with a code for basic settings not done on throttle body possably the same code. after cleaning, it re set but the basic setting fault code cleared first, before i did the basic setting. it will not run the reset if there are any fault codes.
Is the ecu dry. have you tried disconnecting it. are you sure the tool you are using is good at vag
if the wirings good and the throttle body is new
id be borrowing an ecu i think.
all car electronics may have a free running one to try.

Don't you have to LOGIN before doing Adaptions on these. ??

I did something like this last week and if i didn't login first it kept coming up "ERROR"

VCDS gives the code required when logging in.

I might be way off the mark, but i don't use VCDS that much so I have to print the info off usually before doing most adaption or programming jobs.

Im sure you'll already of checked but are you in measuring blocks or basic settings when you enter group 060.

The very first thing that should of been done on this when re-adapt wont perform is a smoke test!
And am assuming car runs fine so you have not consider that,i would go into mb 32 and use the 1st two fields, which indicate idle and load.
Anything away from-+10 indicates a fault...

If you have tried every thing else perhaps you should have the ECU tested ?
We have just replaced an Ecu on an A8, it would not tickover & we could not carry out throttle body adapt.
No other faults or codes present.
New ECU cured this fault, of course after we had checked & double checked everything else.

Am I missing something in the fact that you say to do a smoke test, why would a leak affect the ECU & throttle body from doing an idle adaption ?
I can understand a leak will make it run roughly or many other faults.
The only thing I know that causes a throttle body adaption to fail is if the coolant temp out of range.

Hi Ian yes, if there is an air leak, then yes adaption cannot be performed for some reason. (even though its done with ign on ONLY, and does not make sense, but there are things on cars that that we will never know about and seem odd, but accept it when we get the botton of it.)
And i have just re-read the 1st post again which highlights this as his 2nd block is -93, which indicates a leak at high engine revs.

I have to confess that I gave up with this one and sent it to a friend of mine who has VAS to see if a software update would cure the fault. It didn't and on further investigation it turned out that there was a disconnected earth wire in the scuttle near the ECU. When this was reconnected, he was able carry out the adaptions no problem and all was well. Needless to say, I was a little pee'd off as I should of found this!
