Suzuki Grand Vitara 1.6 16v 2003 - Code P0130 - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.6 16v
( Optional) Fault Codes: p0130

Hi All

Just wondered if anybody had a scope pattern for the air flow meter on one of these vehicles. The cost of a new one is £420 plus VAT so want to be 100% happy before ordering one.

Brief History

Vehicle has come from another garage after having 2 pre CAT lambdas to cure a very rich running engine with p0130.

Checked fuel pressure and scoped oxygen sensors, checked for exhaust and intake leaks no immediate faults showing up.

in my opinion the pattern would be similar as other petrol engines. Principle of working the engine is the same . Maf measures the airflow. Post your waveform and someone would advice .
What about basics check lambda - what doest see and fuel trims.

Thanks for your response vehicle came back today so could carry out further checks. Fuel Trims and Lambda readings all fine at idle. My scope pattern does look perfectly fine so was just after a comparison really. Back to basics and a cylinder leakage test showed exhaust valves not seating.

What exactly is the problem with this vehicle? Is the fault code still present and is it still running rich?

Sorry Pete for the delayed response I must remember to tick notify me by email! The vehicle has a pre cat oxygen sensor reading of 1.2v flat when at operating temperature. This reading can be manipulated with induced air leak. Emission check shows very rich vehicle until the fuel trims pull it down. I initially found 2 cylinders failing a cylinder leakage test and removal of the head proved the exhaust valve seats no longer sealing. This has been repaired. I have now removed the spark plugs and with ignition on checked with emission meter into the cylinders the hc's. it appears cylinder 4 has always got around 200ppm after a rotation of the engine (checking the other cylinders) and the other cylinders are never higher than 25ppm. Would one injector leaking under pressure cause an excessive rich mixture??

Hi Ben,

Can you post the 4 gas readings at normal and fast idle please so we can see exactly what is going on. Is the fault code PO130 still present? From memory that indicates a lean mixture, but I would need to check that. A faulty MAF can trigger that. The oxygen sensor of 1.2v is too high as far as I am aware (0.8v approx is the max I would expect to see). This could be caused by a poor earth on the lambda sensor. How is the vehicle running?

The original fault code has gone since the valves being reseated. I now have P0172 mixture too rich. This is being triggered by the 1.2v from the oxygen sensor. I have checked all the wiring from the oxygen sensors to the ecu ands scoped the readings from both ends in which they stay constant. I can't post any gas values until the vehicle returns possibly Saturday unfortunately but they all seem to confirm rich mixture with non existent O2 values and CO sitting anywhere from 3 to 5 at idle. All values look perfect on fast idle from memory.
I have found a few used injectors so am going to try replacing cylinder 4 and see what this does. Will post the results

Hi Ben,

One way of easily checking injector performance is to disconnect each injector in turn whilst watching the CO readings at idle. How is the vehicle running, I would have thought it would be a bit lumpy at idle and poor engine balance if it was a faulty injector.

Yeah I do agree with that and I didn't try that when the vehicle was in. I've just tried adapting a test for gdi injectors and found number 4 can't hold back its fuel when not firing? Will let you know the outcome Saturday. Otherwise I'm getting stumped as to why its running so rich. I have scoped air mass meter and to me it checks out fine as everything else really does pass the tests. Doesn't help every part is genuine suzuki and costs the earth compared to the German world. Oh and customer let me know last night this is a problem that he believes has been ongoing for almost a year. Lovely

We are a BCS in between Bath and Trowbridge in Somerset. Yes the issue must be cured before MOT! I also have a personal issue of not allowing a car to beat me.

Hi Ben,

I thought that some of these vehicles ran with an AFR sensor and not a narrow band sensor?

Which way and what voltage is outputted from the sensor if you introduce an air leak?

Sorry for the lack of response guys. Unfortunately been away ill so the vehicle will be coming in this Saturday.

I am almost positive it's a narrow band sensor though Mark. Although its been renewed recently by another garage I wonder if the cylinder faults and how lean it has been over the last few months could have damaged it?!

Many apologies for not publishing the outcome!!

Thanks for the image that looks the same as I was getting from the Vitara so at least can be saved as a known good one. Many Thanks.

I have fixed the vitara with another pre cat oxygen sensor! 3rd one in almost as many months. It would appear the problems within the cylinders was destroying the oxygen sensors.
