Renault Clio 1.2 16v 2001 - Code P0105 MAP sensor circuit fault - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.2 16V
( Optional ) Scanner Used: DEC SS
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0105

Hi,
Got this clio in with fault code P0105 map sensor circuit fault. Have tested 5v supply tested earth and scoped supply and signal,tested at sensor and ecu. when light comes on i,m getting 1.6v from signal wire, when running correctly i,m getting 0.9 to 1.2v. I rigged up scope and went for drive and map sensor is working correctly, but i cant get it to fault when scope on!
Any advice

Hi Shane,

Few questions: Has this thing got a running fault? Does Freeze Frame show anything of interest? Does the emission readings and fuel trims show anything untoward?

Also, is this the one where the MAP sensor is located on top of the engine? If so, remove and check for contamination.

Finally, the fault code could be a symptom and not the cause.

Hi,
It runs fine in till light comes on then it misses abit.
Removed sensor and theres no contamination. Will check emissions and fuel trims in morn.

Morning,
Short fuel trim is fluctuating from 36% to -10%.
Long fuel trim around 4.7%
CO 0.04
HC 71
LAMBDA 1.003
Fast idle
CO 0.03
HC 18
LAMBDA 1.001

I can see short fuel trim all over the place.
I have checked inlet manifold for leaks with spray as I haven,t bought a smoke machine yet!
Lambda sensor seems to be switching ok!
What else would cause this?

Perhaps a compression test or cylinder power balance test would help. Also what is the actual manifold vacuum like?

Thanks for reply,
Cylinder compression's are 150psi to 160psi.
Manifold vacuum at idle is 22.5 IN.HG vac.
Fuel pressure is 52psi and is holding.

The vacuum is steady I take it?
It's just the way the fuel trim is sporadic, I was assuming it was being driven by something, often the valve clearances are over-looked and require checking.

Hi Shane,

The emissions look good. Were they taken when the fault was present? otherwise they would be meaningless.

No sign of Freeze Frame Data when the EML illuminates?

Now, as far as I am aware, I would expect the short term fuel trim to fluctuate in time with the HO2 sensor but I am not sure by how much. Your + figure looks excessive, but I am sure someone will come along and put me right on that on those two points.

Having looked at Autodata, it is showing that the MAP idle signal voltage should be about 4.3v but that doesn't ring true to me. The voltage you recorded in your first post looks more realistic and it wont be the first time I have seen duff info in AD. Hopefully someone can confirm what the voltage should be.

The fuel pressure and vac readings look OK.

The vacuum was steady.
Sorry Pete the emission were taken with light off. The eml will only usually come on when slowing down at a junction then stall.
Sorry no freeze frame data will get it Monday.

Give us some mBar readings under different operating conditions.

Think about what depression should be present in the manifold under different operating conditions and monitor.

Don't forget that lots of 1.2 16 valve clio's suffer with intermittent stalling problems, Have you checked the condition of the throttle housing to see if its clean or dirty and oily. ??

If the car stalls, it can log Map sensor as a fault as it loses manifold vacuum as it is stalling. ( As pete was suggesting in his first reply )

If the throttle body is clean and the adaptions have been reset and it still stalls then it could have a faulty throttle body, wiring or ecu as they all cause that problem and Renault dealers used to replace all 3 items at the same time as it was the only way that they could guarantee a cure. The only problem is that any of these parts are now more than the cars are worth.

ohh. Just remembered, are the wires to the ecu damaged by the metal anti theft cover that sits over the top of it. ( assuming that its the one with the ecu at the back of the engine. )

The wiring to ecu is fine(but the security box was a b###h to remove!). Customer got car back for weekend so on Monday will check and clean throttle housing and get some mbar readings.

Hi Shane
Does this car have genuine spark plugs in? I had a clio a few years ago kept going into limp home and no throttle response. Flagged up map sensor but also other faults, mine had bosch spark plugs in. Replaced with genuine ones and everything was fine. Its probably nothing but I just thought I mention it.

Hi all

Feel a it of a numbty on this on. Had it back in today and removed oil cap and it was like milk! Head gasket gone .
