According to some research I've done this model does have a BCM although I could see nothing of this unit on the vehicle? I am assuming it must be tucked away somewhere. As usual Autodata was found wanting just when I needed it and doesn't even show me a location for this module so if anyone knows where to find it your input would be great

Hi Luke, Kia called the BCM an ETACS unit in the early vehicles. It's above the brake/clutch pedals. The relay you have is controlled by the ETACS via the tail-lamp cut relay: TAIL LAMP AUTO CUT (1) With the tail lamp switched ON, if the ignition Is switched OFF and the driver's door opened, the tail lamp should be automatically turned OFF. (2) With the ignition switch ON, if the driver's door is opened and the ignition is switched to OFF, the tail lamp should be automatically turned OFF. (3) When the tail lamp is cut automatically and the tail lamp switch is turned OFF and ON, the tail lamp illuminates and auto cut function is cancelled. The relay is earthed through the ETACS unit, into the switch (the switch is on the earth path) onto the earth via a multi-wired joint called JM04 (the upper of 2 main joints). This is behind the dash/radio as is the earth point. ETACS units don't like damp...... Unfortunately, you haven't included an email address, so I'm unable to send you any wiring diags or files. Tony

Thanks for the replies I will give AD a call today and see if they can help, tried the Kia site yesterday but still haven't received the email to verify our account? Will check again. I have included my email now tony which I'm kicking myself for not having included in the first place as I suspect this customer will want their car back today fixed or not! The unit above the brake pedal seems just to be a fuse box or am I being naive? Thanks again

Found it! Exactly where you told me it would be! All grounds to the unit were acceptable so looks like a fault within the unit itself, unfortunately the customer has suddenly remembered that the car is still under warranty and so will now be taking it to kias to have the work done, I have asked for her to let us know the outcome but I shan't hold my breath? Thanks for the advice about autodata I did call and they were able to give me the pin designations for the unit, they were wrong mind but good to know it's worth a phone call in future Thanks again

Hi Luke. I was going to say, tell them to bring it in when its not working, You can't find a fault when its not present. ( doesn't matter now its gone ) What about, human error, ?? i,e there's nothing wrong with the car and they turned the ignition off and opened the door to get out and check round the lights and they noticed that they didn't work. ?? You know what the garage that sold the car will say if they take it back under warranty. ?? YEP. There's nothing wrong with it. bring it in if it goes wrong.

It's funny you should say that mr Sefton as after Mr Ludford informed me of the strategy of these lights with regards to switching off when you open the door I checked this and found he was spot on. Now for two days the car lights worked no matter what loom we stressed or how long we left them on however the receptionist informed me that the customer had come back in to complain after collection because the lights still weren't working?? I'm starting to think this may be a case for the misleading diagnosis post! I may give her a ring on Monday and try and get to the bottom of this?

Surprisingly Jim, Kia would cover an electrical defect of this type providing it's a manufacturing defect (i.e. not left out in a flood for 3 weeks)! Not so long ago, I've changed a dual mass flywheel on a 92k mile 57 plate Ceed. Warranty covered the flywheel and slave cylinder (manufacturer would expect it to last >100k miles), but wouldn't cover the clutch at that age. Customer paid for his own clutch. Sedona 58 plate 3 years out of warranty, oil pump drive failed = known concern. Engine and turbo seized. Kia supplied brand new items (not recon)
