Peugeot 207 cc 1.6 5FW 2007 - Catalyst efficiency #

Year of Manufacture *: 2007
Engine Size and Code *: 1600 EP6(5FW)

Does anyone know if Peugeot do a upgrade for catalyst efficiency fault on this engine. We fitted an aftermarket cat a year ago but since the car brings up the antipollution message with
fault code for efficiency of the Cat. We test it each time it comes in with no air leaks, sensors switching fine, emissions clean as a whistle so it
has an intermittent fault which we suspect to be the voltage slightly out of range for the lambda operation. Called the dealer today and they say needs a genuine cat fitted. I asked if there was a related software update to vary the sensor voltages which I was told no idea, car would need booking in and a software update ran at £90 please. Many thanks

What was the original fault i.e. why was the O.E cat removed ?

The only good thing about after market cats is that the pykey's don't bother nicking them.

Declan, you have made your bed, you are now going to have to lay in it, same as P0420 on petrol cars, you have fitted and charged for inferior parts, up to you to sort it at your own cost, not customers fault you fitted sh** parts to their car,but it will be up to you to sort it out and no court in the UK will support you, buy genuine emission parts, I get fed up up telling traders this !!!!!

Thanks for the replies, Aiden the cat had collapsed internally so had no power.

UKAT5143, thanks for your educated reply there about how I operate and how I fitted inferior parts etc, Now if you would care to get down off that high horse of yours a minute!,
The cat was replaced as had collapsed inside, the customer was advised it required a genuine cat and declined to have that fitted based on cost of the part. We fitted a OE equivalent part as we always do regardless of what the part is so was not a cheap no brand cat. My question was is there a software upgrade available and here we are with a reply which has no info whatsoever related to what I had asked so it makes me wonder where you come from in the trade, I suspect ex main dealer where you have ingrained that every part non dealer would be "shit parts" as you put it. We operate to try and help our customers and build relationships not screw them at every opportunity for the most expensive part possible. If a genuine cat is required it will be fitted and we all have built up our experience along the way with what to fit and what not to fit but coming on here and telling me I have fitted "Shit" parts and made my bed etc is not helpful. Maybe take a leaf from Aidens book above, He has diplomatically told me the same thing in a way which we in the trade understand but he hasn't let rip like you have. I am pleased you have all this knowledge but maybe try and an answer the question in future and not just have a go, Interestingly if you had read the full description above you will know it is a petrol car.

Well Chris, simple things eh, that would actually get the voltage reading up at the lambda sensor slightly as would detect less oxygen. Have used one before on a near standard Subaru Impreza to fool the ECU as it ran a high flow cat and would whack it to limp mode every 250-300 miles. Was sceptical at first but it did seem to do the trick and would go through the MOT with only 1 cat fitted.

I have used something similar on an old Fiesta and Focus, both showing P0420 codes even though both cars passed the emissions tests easily (and ECU's up to date).
The Fiesta one came with some metal "swarf" at the bottom to slow down gas flow, which I thought was a good idea too.

In Aidans defence, he is right in what he's saying, unfortunately "OE" spec in the form of emission parts more often than not, is way short of the mark!

lets join in fun here , we fitted a brand new manifold cat that had blocked on a toyota that was 13 years old.

it was a type approved one, and took my fitter all morning to put in, roll forward 3 weeks and its back with a cat below efficiency code. so we stuck it on the gas machine and the emissions were a pass, so we fitted one of these.

the price of the new cat from toyota would have written a perfectly diecent car off.

i would recommend filling the front of the extender with wire wool first , that way it will slow the o2 sensor response time right down, we tried it with out first time ,at idle it looked good but at 2500 rpm it went back to switching like the front one.

so buy a extender that has room for the sensor and some packing.

I did see a right angle extender on a ST focus last week that had no cat at all (there wasn't room for a straight extender). Not sure where it came from though. I guess the idea is to move the sensor out of the gas flow?

Hello Declan
Peugeot do not as far as I know give specific details as to what their updates fix.
A software update may assist in altering the
emissions parameters.
I have updated Peugeot vehicles with an original
catalyst and cured some vehicles.
I have updated vehicles with aftermarket catalysts
and not had any success.

I would advise a new genuine unit along with the
update for a correct lasting repair.

You pretty much summed up your predicament in that statement.

Your experience is being "built up" as this unfoulds & you are also still learning what to fit & not what not to fit.

Tony is correct (even if his posting style is less diplomatic than it might be

The blunt reality is that you almost certainly have fitted a component, which is not fit for purpose (regardless of the manufacturers claims).

I don't think that I am alone in my view that, P0420 is one of the most accurate DTC's that we see every week.

Rarely does the conclusion turn out to be anything other than "Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold"

This article is five years old now, but nowt has changed, as regard aftermarket Catalyst quality.....

never as a description been more bandied about by aftermarket suppliers "oe quality" cats !!!
unfortunately most are not "oe" quality if they were the light would not come back on barring other faults
customer insisting you fit cheap one then spending rest of your life turning the light off
wheres the profit in that plus will tell blokes in pub you fitted shit cat

Declan you've certainly not done your customer or yourself any favours. Fitting a genuine cat was the only option, now it's come back and bit you in the arse. I hope for your sake you had the insight to put a disclaimer on his invoice, if not then it's down to you to put it right, you are going to be out of pocket.

I guess you can now say you have built up your experience along the way with what to fit and what not to fit.

I have in the past fitted an'OE spec' cat to an Astra, 3 days before the EML came back on and the low catalyst efficiency code and description.

At about the same time we were asked to replace a manifold cat on a Fiesta, I took the old one off the car, when I compared to to the one that was to be fitted, the new one was half the diameter of the old genuine one. I point blank refused to fit it.

So Very strongly advise now - Genuine Cats, Genuine or Bosch O2 sensors
