Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 2002 - AC fault codes but no AC fitted #

Year of Manufacture *: 2002
Engine Size and Code *: 1.25L Zetec
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Various!

This car has come in with 3 engine managment fault codes reporting AC relay, fan No.2 faults etc but it has no air conditioning fitted.

I have an old version of IDS but I'm not that familier with it and can't get it to communicate with the car properly. It keeps telling me that the cars engine ECU is blank and is asking for the ECUs part number etc.

Is it possible to change the configurations in the engine ECU to tell it that there is no aircon or is this going to be a software update?

What the problem with the car?

I have a feeling that these always had A/C fault code logged if not fitted,(did not put light on)

The customer is complaining that the engine management light comes on intermittently when driving. There are no other codes stored other than these 3 air conditioning related codes.

Have you tried EOBD ?

why are the cooling fan codes specific to air con only ?

Can you post the fault codes? are they shown as permanent or intermittent ?

Is there any freeze frame data?

Do the fans work when driven by the scan tool?

No fault codes stored under EOBD.

Manufacturer faults recorded -

P0481 - cooling fans 2 control circuit
P0645 - AC clutch relay control circ.

There is only one fan fitted.

Are you sure its the engine malfunction warning light that the customer is seeing & not something daft like the handbrake / low brake fluid warning light?

It wouldn't be the first time a customer is misreporting a problem & sending a mechanic off on a tangent.

I too am pretty sure that those A/C codes are displayed when A/C is not present. I seem to remember that the old Snap-On Hermitage would even say "Ignore if A/C not fitted)

I'm with Dave, I think those a/c codes are red herrings. If they where the problem the light would be on permanently.

I assume the light has not been on for you?

I have experienced issues with Fords not storing intermittent faults in memory as yo would expect.

This is an old car with no running issues so no point in running up a bill for endless testing.

If this was my customer I would request he drops in without an appointment when the light is on, ask him leaving it running.

You can confirm warning light and code read it, I think you will see another fault.

Any faults in other systems ? I had one bringing on an abs light but no ABS and it turned out to be inst cluster fault
