Hi Tman, a few more thoughts...

'Fixing climate change is not a uniting event' - actually I'm tempted to agree with Peterson's point on this. There's plenty of scope for it to get turned into a partisan political issue, as has happened in the US and the UK to a lesser extent. A certain kind of conservative used to at least talk about climate change and other environmental issues (even Thatcher made a few noises in that direction, of course while wrecking the UK environment and expanding the oil industry at the same time). Naomi Klein embraced this, arguing that the necessary responses to climate change were fundamentally incompatible with free market dogma, but others would like to keep small-c conservatives on board if possible, eg: Paul Kingsnorth here: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v36/n20/paul-kingsnorth/the-four-degrees

I went to a talk by an anti-fracking lady from Texas and it sounded like they had some success even in a totally oil-dominated economy by simply focusing on the health issues of kids getting nosebleeds, respiratory conditions, cancers etc. The Denton council banned fracking within the town limits after that, though immediately getting the decision overturned by the state government natch. See: http://frackfreedenton.org/ Whether local refusals like that can escalate to the point where it becomes impossible for the industry to continue is another question. Not that I think a green-socialist world government would be more likely to succeed...

'Stop using fossil fuels, you say. Well, that's easy! Thanks for your brilliant input! I don't think anyone's even thought of that.' - thanks, I do my best You'd be surprised how many people don't get it and settle for half-measures that will leave the planet to cook.

Otherwise, you don't like world-savers. Fine, I get it, I'm no fan of tyrants-in-waiting either (though I'm still not seeing any in the environmental movement). At least the best of them are looking to the full scale of the problem though. Peterson wants to invest in 3rd world nutrition to release the power of their minds, and fast-track their economic development to western standards. How this will stop global warming is beyond me (aside from the usual dangers of neoliberal meddling in other countries). But it doesn't sound like he considers it a real priority.

    cheers,
    I
