A side effect is that you end up being a better person (cf. / contrast: "being helpful"). EG: instead of "enforcing thermal efficiency in the [6000] new homes [that get built on some ancient land around some ancient village] - you build no new homes, maintain what's already there with love and care, train the youth in useful skills that nurture pride.
As for the solution to energy and connected crises... I see no solution, only possible accommodation with the proviso that it's proved easy to make worse under the banner of making it better.
