In the same way the fake left uses the environment to hook people into an interventionist narrative Archived Message

In my opinion Peterson uses the uglier, and more universally offensive excesses of identity politics to try to hook people into a narrative of (paraphrasing) "you should only have yourself to rely on", "the strong should thrive" and "the environment? Pah, there is nothing that can be done" to give just three examples.

If these obvious excesses did not exist, there would be much less opportunity for a Peterson to thrive.

Manufacturing in the US really was gutted by global trade agreements and by off-shoring, and for the once proud communities who were affected, being told by the affluent and those who benefited "Now, now, don't be recist", for example, must be explosively infuriating. I can very well understand it, and the answer seems simple: Focus on lifting up working people.
